Pretty sure that's in your mind. Hipster Millenials can't afford to buy a house, but they sure can grow beards (although, Crosby and Malkin aren't great examples).
If anything, we're in the heyday of the playoff beard. In the 90s, the playoff goatee was more common than a full beard.
Look at the Wings 20 years ago...
A few guys with goatees, but hardly any true playoff beards.

Did the Oilers in 2005 touch the cup in the conference finals? They lost in the finals.

If a team doesn't care about winning the conference trophy, then it sure as #### shouldn't matter about trying to win your division during a ''meaningless'' regular season, right? No point in having a President's trophy either since it doesn't matter. Hell, might as well cancel all the player awards since they don't matter, since I guess the Cup in the only goal.
Of course it matters. I wish more teams lifted the conference trophy and paraded it around the ice. It's a huge accomplishment to win the conference, fans feel pride over it, and it's an objective that has been reached. I think it's dumb when teams act like it's nothing.

Ask the team that loses the final how much a conference championship matters. Think Thornton is going to brag about the 2016 Western Conference champions? Not a chance.
There's one goal in the playoffs. Anything else leaves a disappointed team and fanbase.

No, Huntingwhale is right, the conference championship definitely means something. Teams just don't want to take their eyes off the ultimate prize so it is often not celebrated very much.
Just because it isn't the most important doesn't mean it has no importance. Ask Flames fans or players if 2004 meant nothing because we didn't win the Cup. You'd rightfully take some serious flak for saying something so stupid.

They shouldn't even have a presentation when the conference finals are over, just give it to the teams after the finals are over, the teams can choose to celebrate them or not.

I'm pretty inclined to believe that any team is going to be proud of what they accomplished after the sting of just missing out on the cup subsides.
You think the team that loses in the finals is as proud as the last-place team? the team that just missed out? or even the team that lost in round 1? I'm going to confidently say that human nature says you'd be completely wrong.
The conference championship matters. It isn't the Stanley cup, but it's a huge accomplishment in its own right. I bet Thornton and Burns were pretty damn proud about getting to the finals.

Just touch the damn trophy.
Also, Jason Smith didn't touch the trophy in '06.

When I walk into the Saddledome and see our (few) banners hanging, including the '04 WC Champs, I always feel pride about it. Memories come flooding back.
Yeah it sucks to lose in the finals. But it's important to celebrate those moments. Maybe not even for a couple years. But down the road, yes.
Life is about celebrating small accomplishments, even if it means losing out on the big prize in the end. Pro sports shouldn't be any different.

Only if animatronic Clarence Campbell hands the bowl to the West team .

The 2006 Oilers skated right by the Cup and did not even acknowledge it, IIRC.
