given that it's a pretty weak UFA class, I'm sure he'll find another sweet lunatic deal somewhere, just like Lecavalier did last year.

Because #NHL teams cannot buyout a #NHL signing bonus, #Rangers Richards will also receive 8M over the next 3 yrs from New York.

Brad will not be a big UFA this year, but he is far from done. I would guess he gets a 1 or 2 year deal for $2.5M

He hated the travel there. I don't know if that changes with their move to the Central Division.

Looks like we dodged a bullet big time but still have to wonder if he would have had a better fate playing inbetween Tangs and Iggy.

I have no idea where he might end up. On the surface, he is still putting up points at a decent enough clip to get a contract, but he slipped down the line up as the playoffs went along.
I wouldn't be too surprised if he ended up on a team like Columbus, maybe even Ottawa depending on what they get back for Spezza. Doesn't seem to me like there is going to be a lot of demand for his services at this stage of his career.

His deal was 5 years at $4.5M? That is way to much.

He may have put up ten or twenty more points, we still would have finished 9th, and if anything we'd be further behind than we are today.
In theory.

That is setting a really high standard.
He was a top-6 forward in a team that played 25 playoff games... and came back against Crosby/Malkin and the Penguins being down 3-1 with Richards scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 road game 7.
If you are basing the buyout on his ho-hum playoff performance then Crosby should have been bought out as well.

Remember this?
MCKENZIE: FLAMES HAVE MADE A LEGITIMATE OFFER FOR RICHARDS 7/2/2011
Flames general manager Jay Feaster was the GM of the Lightning when Richards was there and there's no question that Feaster put together a package that had Richards thinking very long and hard about the option of maybe going to the Flames. The deal is believed to be in the same sort of financial neighbourhood as the Rangers' offer - maybe up around nine years at $64 million.

That's a tad low... I'd guess that it'll be more in the 3-3.5 range. In any event he won't be holding court in a pub with 20 teams waiting in line to pitch him like last time.

Easily could have been 2/3rds of the league. Hard to fathom that he was once so coveted... everybody that didn't have an internal budget below the cap ceiling wanted Brad Richards.

The scary thing is in subsequent STH meetings Ken King says the Flames offer was actually higher than what the media had reported.

Couldn't of happened to a more deserving guy. Loses in the final. Then gets bought out a week later.
I wish these compliance buyouts never existed. I would have loved to watch the Rags eat those contracts.
