Interesting news. Who replaces him?

His roster spot can be better used as a cap floor filler. I liked how Butler played during the season, but we need a 4-5 million dollar D-man in his spot.

A right handed UFA. Overpay for Matt Greene, or go for Fayne.
Boychuk or McQuaid wouldn't be bad acquisitions either.

I said it in another thread, but a gritty veteran like Matt Greene or Willie Mitchell would be nice. If they get hurt, that means Wotherspoon gets more playing time.
On the other hand, it'd be awesome to be able to get Boychuk or McQuaid out of Boston.

There are worse defenseman out there than Chris Butler.
I think he was a fine defenseman at the 5/6 position, #2 in the NHL with blocked shots looks really good. I think there are better options out there though.

Not at all surprising. As bettman and I said in the Butler re-signing poll thread, he had no interest in returning partly due to his significant other. Flames would have had to make him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Not really a surprise with Burke in charge. Butler is as far opposite from truculent as you can get.

Our defence was bad last year and we need changes. This is a good move, if they replace him from outside if tr organization then I hope they find another Russell kind of player or better

Saw this coming. I think Butler will be replaced via UFA.

He was shot block leader because the other team always had possession of the puck when he was on the ice....those stats can be misleading...

If we're taking a crack at UFAs I'd like Meszaros or Greene.

They sure can be if they are also a 5/6 D man that frequently gets played on the top 2 pairings.

The Matt Greene love surprises me. He was a healthy scratch a fair number of times in the playoffs for the Kings and had by the far the lowest ice time of a defenseman on the team when he did dress.
Basically seems like Shane O'Brien the 2nd. A plug who you sign because he's big.
