I don't think the World Cup will ever take off. If Canadians can't get invested in the tournament it's a tall task to expect Americans to follow a hockey tournament held late summer. Maybe next time they will be wiser and have games out west (Calgary and Edmonton) so they could at least sell out some games.

I'm not surprised at all. After the World Cup was hatched it was only a matter of time until NHL participation in the Olympics ended.

Brutal. First the whole arena thing and now this...the people running the NHL are making it really had to be a fan of this league. What a bunch of crybaby owners.

Sometimes the NHL makes it tuff to be a fan.

The NHL will be back in the Olympics. Just in 2022 as the Chinese market is too hard for Bettman to ignore. They will skip 2018 because the Korean market is much less important

If the NHL was serious about wanting to build their game in Asia, then they wouldn't have made this decision. They could have used the Olympics in Korea to help build the fan base across Asia, while satisfying their core North American fan base too.

Now they just look like petulant, rich owners that don't look for long term benefits to the game, they have upset their core fans who really enjoy the Olympic tournament, not to mention putting further stress on their relationship with the NHLPA.

Bettman will be booed to kingdom come at the awarding of the 2017 Stanley Cup!

I am not good with math or the Olympics knowledge.

Is Korea near China?

Will there be Chinese participating/watching the 2018 Olympics?

This will be interesting because I believe the IOC president has said that if the NHl doesn't go to SK, they will not be allowed to go to China as well.

Instead, the IOC has now expressed the position that the NHL’s participation in Beijing in 2022 is conditioned on our participation in South Korea in 2018.

Seems to be that way. All depends who flinches first.

I would call BS on this. The IOC would have no control on which players each national team can place on their teams. It's no the "NHL" going to the Olympics, it's the players.

Doesn't the IOC has some involvement in the insurance on the players?

I don't understand why Ovechkin would want to play in a Spengler Cup level of an Olympic tournament. Maybe because he has a chance to finally win something important?

Well, my interest level in the 2018 Olympics just took a nose dive. I enjoy a few of the other sports and events, but hockey is the main reason I tune in every 4 years. So who's gonna make up team Canada now? A mix of junior players and guys playing over in Europe maybe? The U.S. team will obviously be college players. And Ovechkin is probably going no matter what the NHL tells him.

As for the World Cup, if they get rid of the gimmick teams and put it back to the regular countries, I'll probably tune in. If not, I couldn't care less.

It was the president of the IIHF, and he said he didn't want the NHL picking and choosing when to go. But he's a paper tiger, because he's not going to tell the NHL no if they said "we're back for 2022".

It's like wow, hasn't the NHL learned the lesson that showcasing your sport in the Olympics grows the game in non traditional markets.

I mean look at how handball has taken off in North America. It's been a tough slog what with the sport being in the Olympics since 1936 but now the pro handball league is laughing. Good luck giving up on China Bettman!

to be honest, this doesn't bother me at all as a hockey fan. Maybe that's just me, but apart from the WJC, I have very little interest in international tournaments and as a fan I really don't like interrupting the schedule for the Olympics. The World Cup is stupid too IMO, but at least it doesn't force a schedule break.

Zero chance of that happening. They would remove hockey from the Olympics before that would happen.
