I really don't know much about Dawn Braid...but, IMO, unusual coaching hires CAN help some teams...Back when Yawney was the HC in Chicago, he had Dan Jansen, Olympic Speed Skater, teaching skating techniques, and Duncan Keith really seems to have benefitted.

She's going to be the skating coach? In what way is that a first? She was skating coach with Calgary.

Full time, exclusive to one team.

As much as it should be a non-story it is still a first for a woman to be named a full-time coach in the NHL. I like the bold and different moves they're making in Arizona.

Bout time. Maybe one day she becomes a GM, head coach, or AGM?

I think a lot of teams would benefit from having women on coaching staffs tbh.

Agreed. I'm actually surprised there aren't at least a few women heading up strength/conditioning programs for teams.

I think women could make good head coaches, but this is only a skating coach. It's a non-story to me too. Congratulations to her, but the position itself is just not high enough to be newsworthy. This has nothing to do with the person, her ability or gender.

I'll be more interested/looking forward to the day the first woman gets hired as an NHL head coach, and when the first female head coach wins a Stanley Cup. I hope both happen sooner rather than later.

Not a non story to me. As a woman I find myself very proud of this 'first' and hope for many talented women to make more firsts.

It would be great to see and have millions of little girls have such a high powered role model. The reality though is that I doubt it ever happens (unless someone wants to do it purely for becoming the "first" to do it).

Think about the hundreds or thousands of top tier coaches around the world who AREN'T in the NHL. They are all men. If I'm a GM of an NHL club, I'm going to be searching for the best coach available, full stop. The pool to choose from is all men.

Once women start becoming elite midget/junior coaches, and then eventually minor pro coaches, we won't see an NHL coach for a really really long time. The barriers to women start way earlier than the major pro level, because at the pro level, a GM don't care if you are black, gay, purple, female, trans or WASP, if you have the skills, you are in.

Good for her, I'd like to see a head coach just to observe the psychology of it. My guess is after 20 games gender would become irrelevant to the players but not the fans.

She will still be working with the Flames part time:

Although Braid is full-time, she will still keep her individual clients back in Ontario, and she will serve as a consultant for Calgary, spending what Flames GM Brad Treliving says will be between seven and 10 days per month with the team. Chayka has no problems with that arrangement.

Excellent -- I hate losing out on top talent, and skating is so much a part of the modern game.

Wish the Flames would be taking the lead on some of these things.
