They're guaranteed to get one player for nothing from each team. Who do you think the Flames should have exposed over Giordano? Hanifin, Andersson, or Tanev?

Coaching contracts seem like a spot where GMs could tidy up their work a bit. Still baffling to me that Treliving extended Sutter a year before his contract was up, Darryl is the poster boy for a "shelf life" coach and was entering his 3rd year.

They have access to the same info we do about the average shelf life of a coach.

IMO Hakstol was always only going to be a Kickstarter coach for Seattle. Now Francis has to find the guy to unlock the scoring from the player group.

I think we were mostly in agreement about that, but there was an argument made to trade Giordano that year when the Flames were going nowhere. It would have been difficult because every team except Las Vegas had the same constraints about protecting players.

Couldn't we have protected all of them and exposed more fwds instead? in hindsight maybe we'd be better off if they'd have taken Bennett or Mangiapane or Backlund. who knows

There seems to be a belief now among GMs that you can't possibly let a coach go into the last year of his contract without extending him - that somehow his performance will suffer if he has no job security.

It's absurd.

Bennett was already traded at the time.

I said it at the time before we traded Bennett, that we should have kept him to dangle as expansion draft bait because his trade value wasn't super high. Seattle ended up getting a fair bit more by trading Giordano than what we got for trading Bennett. If Gio wasn't in the Flames plans anymore, trading him would have been way better asset management.

To Toronto:

Mark Giordano ($3,375,000 retained - 50%) · $3,375,000
Colin Blackwell · $725,000

To Seattle:

2022 2nd round pick (TOR - #58 - Niklas Kokko)
2023 2nd round pick (TOR - #57 - Lukas Dragicevic)
2024 3rd round pick (TOR - #88)

vs.

To Florida:

Sam Bennett · $2,550,000
2022 6th round pick (CGY - #187 - Gustav Karlsson)

To Calgary:

Emil Heineman · $0 (AHL/JR) (Signing Rights)
2022 2nd round pick (FLA - #61 - David Goyette)

Really bad asset management by the wizard.

I don't think it was bad asset management at all.

We knew we would lose a player. Instead of going through all the gymnastics of trading pieces around to keep a 38 year old defenceman.

I am glad we didn't trade anything to Seattle either to sway them from selecting Gio.

These are the rules, we lost the player and move on.

It's absurd.
GMs absolutely should not be allowed to enter their final year. Brad Treliving showed us exactly why.

I’d say coaches should be treated the same. Everything should be done with the long term health of the team in mind - and coaching as if there is no tomorrow means you’re less likely to spend time helping players grow. We saw this stupidity play out in Calgary with how Bennett was coached.

There's a short shelf life for expansion team coaches.

Ditto "rebuilding" teams.

I stand corrected. Credit to the franchise for keeping that quiet. Or maybe credit to Hakstol for not going full Sutter with the media.

Will the players be called names like the ones on our team?

They just want to have fun.

This is what we are reaping because our kids have been so entitled over the last 20 years or so. Players being coddled and told their poop don't stink from their pee wee days right through to the Pros. A league of pansies that can't take criticism from a coach, teammate or anyone. It's sad, really.

Do you think being abusive and miserable to be around is ok?

I'm far from a Treliving apologist but I think you spelled Edwards wrong

On the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman suggests the Kraken may just bring up Dan Bylsma from their AHL team.

Oof.

Also suggests that ownership wants Francis to be more aggressive when it comes to making moves this off season. Like, they know who they hired as GM right? His hands are sewn to his ass.

Bylsma bombed with a rebuilding Sabres team but he did have a lot of success with the Penguins and is an improvement on Hakstol.
