His career was already over when he joined the Edmonton Oilers.

Except for the stink near the end, probably one of the best guys to lace up some skates and was an awesome player everywhere he went.
Thank you for 04, Okotoker!

Wasnt he still owed $3.25M for this upcoming season? What happens to that?

With it being the last year he probably will fail the physical and be put on LTIR. Will probably process his retirement papers after he has been paid out.

Yeah, he's not retiring, he just knows he won't get cleared to play.

Ference has one year left on his contract. It’s unlikely he’ll be able to pass the physical. Which means Edmonton will put him on long-term injured reserve and he’ll end up joining fellow former Bruins player Nathan Horton in hockey limbo until his contract is up.

Good luck on his retirement. Now that he's no longer with the Oilers it's right back to loving him again.

So hes not really retiring and this is much ado about nothing. Ference has been medically done for a while now.
In terms of his character I find it really strange, I really like him on Calgary and Boston, I couldnt have been happier when he won the Cup (at Vancouver's expense no less!!) but I really soured on him because of his actions and attitude as an Oiler.
It was like he assumed all of the worst qualities associated with the Oilers. I knew he mired in the quagmired morass of the Oil, but he sunk down to their level and made it seem like this was okay.
It sucks that it has to end this way for him.

I'd be interested in an Okotoker return (wasn't around when he was) and some inside dirt on how terribad the situation really was.

Meh, I'm sure if you go back in any player's career, there's going to be a moment here or there that they aren't proud of and wouldn't do again. Ference still deserves respect. He's not Raffi Torres or anything.

Dont care for the guy whatsoever. Jumped Stempniak and then pretended he was standing up for his team .... (by jumping a defenseless winger not known for toughness?). He is a wannabe tough guy. If anything, im sad hes retiring because he was awesome to play against. One of the most beatable defensemen 1-on-1.
Basically, he was the rex ryan of hockey, minus the foot fetish and such.

Ference put in some really solid years here, was part of the '04 run and even shouted them out when he won with Boston and some people here hate him because of one incident with a guy who isn't even on the team anymore? Ridiculous. He was one of the only Oilers I didn't hate.

You don't play in the NHL for over 17 years and a 1000 games if you are one of the most "beatable" guys.
he is a heck of a hockey player and truly good guy.

Edmonton dodges a bullet. If only the Flames could talk Wideman into retiring.

I like you because your avi (go pack) but I simply disagree. He was a mediocre guy that stuck around. He was poor in 04, poor with Boston and miserable with Edmonton. How he ever got the C is beyond me.
What makes him such a good guy compared to anyone else?
