Default Welding Goggles or Glasses

I'm trying to find welding goggles or glasses for the upcoming solar eclipse this summer. Nasa recommends a #14 tint, and everything I can find locally has a #5 tint. I am assuming the lower number is less tint, so not dark enough.

I've tried Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, Home Depot and Lee Valley. Any other suggestions?

I've googled it, and some of the glasses I see available online look to be pretty phony looking; like "blue blockers" rebranded. Not something I want to trust my eyesight with.

For the last total eclipse in 1979 we had this box with a pinhole opening. Not really a great effect.

And of course obligatory.....
Spoiler!

And in case anybody else wants to see the path of the eclipse:

Yes, tried their website as well. Only goes up to #5, and no pricing unless you have an account.

Looking at google, a 14 rating isn't as common as NASA says...most charts only goto 13

I found these though:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...JAMGZ6MYNWCQRA

Telus Spark posted back in 2012 that they were out of Eclipse glasses, so it's possible they might sell them being a science center and all

Have you thought about using a potato?

I always have this vision that every 25 or so years welding shops have a huge run on #14 welding goggles

Maybe try calling a welding shop and asking if it exists s and where to get it

Talked to a welder I know and he said you probably can't goggles that high because goggles aren't for welding they are for cutting/torching. He recommended just buying the helmet glass since that will go to 14, but then you have to look through a square lens. https://www.acklandsgrainger.com/en/..._/R-NONP241H14

Would 14 be far off 12?

Just peel off a Dasani label and use that. It's the same thing.

I emailed them and got a call back pretty quick. Unfortunately with the Star Trek stuff going on their store only has Star Trek stuff. They will be switching over before the summer, but don't know yet what they will have.

I'm admittedly intrigued by this. It looks like the closest location (driving-wise) is Rexburg, Idaho; it also passes directly over Casper, Wyoming?

Oh, and from the Simpsons Monorail episode:

Check out any welding shop for #14 lenses, should be around 5$. Just pop them in some cardboard and you're good to go

Lee Valley has some awesome ones. I saw these in their last catalog. Tempted to get them just for the coolness factor.

I guess that is my question- I have no idea where to find welding shops. Are they all open to the public to shop, or are some like Eecol where they really are for professionals?
