Who is better internally right now? O'Brien? Breen? Not even close.

Sign him, make the kids earn their spot lest we become like Edmonton.
The hope is he isn't needed much next year unless there are injuries, but on a cheap deal keep him.

Only keep him if there is absolutely no other option. The fact is, Flames need to get bigger and meaner. As much as I'd like to keep all the ''good guys'' around, we are near the bottom of the league and changes and tough decisions need to be made. If we let Butler walk, and get sign/acquire another defenceman who fits the bill of truculent, I'll be happy. However, if nothing is available, I'd be fine with keeping him on for another season and flipping him at the deadline.

If there was only some way to get McQuaid/Boychuk from Boston without giving him too much.

Nor room for injuries.

If you can get him on a 1 year contract you do it. Even if you have to give him a small raise. He isn't that bad when used properly and the Flames will want to get to the cap floor anyway. It's only one year, and maybe you can sign him for one more after that if you really need him.

I would bet the Flames will try to sign Chris Butler to an extension.
He has played much better in the second half.

Butler used to suck so bad when Sutter was coaching. Now that Hartley's got everyone playing his way, Butler looks pretty decent. Sign him if it's cheap or let him walk if doesn't want to come back. He's a better d-man under Hartley than he ever was with Sutter.

If you had asked this two months ago the answer would have been an easy walk. But his progression has been on the right side of improvement, and his shot block numbers are insane. Yeah he had a lot of brain farts, but he has really worked hard to be a much better all around dman. Plus he is always right in the middle of scrums and he always does his best to protect the goalie.
So if the price is right (nice and low, say 2 years at 1.8 a year) keep him.

I would look for a better option first, and settle on Butler if that has been exhausted. Again, the Flames may need to overpay a sixth defenceman just for cap floor purposes. I strongly suspect (guess) Butler will try and move to St. Louis or a close city, anyway.
And for those who doubt the merits of the above comparison, here's Gio who we all agree has been spectacular, who everyone posts better numbers with:

In that case, we definitly need to keep him because we will always need an operable 7th d man so regardless of how well wotherspoon performs, we need him to stick around, sign him to 2 years at most

Giordano being awesome is inflating the W/O Buter's possession numbers.

I would prefer to sign him to a two year deal max and get rid of Wideman but doubt we can find a taker for Wideman so in that case I would prefer Wotherspoon in his role.
If the team is willing to sit Wideman as the 7th guy then maybe you bring Butler back but the team is already full of bottom pairing guys so all he brings is a warm body to the table.
He hasn't been as horrible as he was in past years but he is still pretty bad overall.

Sign for a 2 year deal.
Giordano, Brodie, Russell, Smid, Butler + free spot.
The Flames should be looking at everything possible to move Wideman or buy him out. There is more than enough offense on the backend with Brodie, Giordano and Russell.
