I think Semin in somewhat like Kovalev, though less storied. I do think he was probably one of the top 5 most talented players in the NHL during his peak, much like Kovalev was. They both suffered a bit from motivation issues (or at the very least, what we on the outside assume was motivation).
As Habernac pointed out, he never seemed the same after his wrist injury. Hell of a fun player to watch when he was on his game though, that's for sure. Damn fun player to watch.

Semin, Kovalev, Malakhov, Yashin, Yakupov - the number of talented but under motivated Russian hockey players is a fairly lengthy one.

I bet the number of talented of Canadians who were "under motivated" is also pretty damn long.
"Under motivated" is a pretty insulting way to put it. "Under motivated" people don't make the NHL.

Ok "left you wanting", "lacked heart", "never played to their potential" - you pick the phrase - but you get the point.

Consistent. That's the key word around Semin. Or the lack thereof. All word superstar skills which we all witnessed. Damned bloody shame he couldn't put it together long than half a season. Still, he put up a ton of goals even as a ghost.

Groin injury with the Canes.
He was never the fastest to begin with, and this killed his skating.

Would like to point out he missed about 1/6th of his career from injuries. Still had all the potential to be one of the best but never used it

His shot couldn't break a pane of glass after this

That goal he scored pretty much lying down a couple of seasons ago was a beaut. Even for the canes he want on some crazy hot streaks, as pointed out his consistency just wasn't there.
While I certainly don't blame him for going to the canes given the money offered, I wonder what would've happened had he taken less and stuck with ovi.

Semin spent; nothing left in the tank.

Indeed we do get your point - "foreign" equals "bad".

One guy I remember is Zherdev, he could've been a star but didn't seem to care

Man, if I were a recently-retired young multi-millionaire, studying metals in Siberia would not be what I'd be doing.

$47M in NHL earnings, not including the $2.3M/yr Carolina is paying him until 2021 or his KHL earnings
...wow. Not bad for a 14 year career.

I like that last season he played for a team named the Metallurgists and is now going to study to become a metallurgist.
That would be like Dion Phaneuf suddenly retiring because Trudeau offered him a Senate seat.

He's being brought in as a ringer for the big Siberian metallurgist hockey tournament.

I don't think Yakupov belongs on that list. He always puts in a good effort, he just has terrible hockey sense.
