This kind of rhetoric scares me, as I want the message to be "if the best player in the game doesn't deserve league max, then who does?".

In my mind $9.7 talk pushes the deal closer to $12m than to $14m. Also a 5yr deal is the goal. Ideally the extension talk gets drawn out into the season as well, with "plenty of time" talk, and he misses camp next year.

It's Bouma's play, not his contract, that puts him at risk of getting the Bollig treatment. If he were making league minimum, it would be even easier to bury him in the minors, because his entire cap hit would come off the books.
