Well he got 38 in 58 games the next year, which is a 50 goal pace. But he's not on my list, nor even the second or third cut.
I do think that, if you think about most of the other common names - Iginla, Fleury, Nilsson, Kipper, Macinnis, Suter, Makarov, even Gio, Johnny, Newy and Mullen, they are mostly all in the conversation as best in the world - in other words - they make their Olympic teams or are at least considered. Roberts not so much.

I'm assuming these guys are the age they were as a Flame (so we don't get prime Red Army Makarov). Though most of the players people are listing peaked as a Flame.
In this thought experiment I also wonder if a player can only be associated with one team (thinking Gilmour and Macdonald primarily here).
Forwards: Jarome Iginla, Theo Fleury, Joe Nieuwendyk, Kent Nilsson, Sergei Makarov, Joe Mullen, Hakan Loob
Defencemen: Al MacInnis, Gary Suter, Mark Giordano
Goalie: Mikka Kiprusoff
exposed: Johnny, Roberts, Reinhart, Reichel, Vernon, Lanny, Gilmour
Frankly, I suspect we'd lose either Gilmour or Johnny. Whoever this all time expansion team is, they'll have lots of goalies and defencemen. Not too many with the skill set of Gaudreau or Gilmour's intangibles.

Curious why Makarov over Johnny? Genuine question.

It's close - they have similar watchability IMO. It's probably mainly about experience at this stage in Gaudreau's career and questions about his ability to adapt.

Regehr was great, but you're nuts. Giordano has put up 4 straight seasons of being one of the top two way defencemen in the league.

Makarov was a better player. That's really all there is to it. I love Johnny just as much as the next guy and hope we can say the same about him one day, but Makarov is a legend.
Anyway, my take on this:
Forwards: Jarome Iginla, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Gary Roberts, Theo Fleury, Lanny McDonald, Sergei Makarov
Defencemen: Al MacInnis, Gary Suter, Robyn Regehr
Goalie: Kiprusoff
Kent Nilsson was as skilled as pretty much anyone, but he was a slacker. Everyone has their faults of course, but that one is kind of unforgivable in hockey.
