How could they possibly stop it?

Club offers player money. Up to the player to accept it over the course of the season or get half or more up front. How can a union tell you otherwise?

the majority are replaceable. the stars are not.

besides. how can the union do anything about a player signing the contract offered and how the wages are paid?

Doesn't really matter if the stars get paid. The majority of players do not and if the majority can't come to terms then the debacle continues.

It would certainly throw a curve into the NHLPA dynamics, when certain players (often more established players, I'd guess more likely to be in leadership positions within the NHLPA) don't have the same motivation to avoid a lockout as others. These lockout-proof contracts for only some players could lend itself to in-fighting within the NHLPA. The end result could be more power for the NHL negotiating stance.
