Default So you want to burn a movie to DVD or vice versa...

So, I am hoping to get some insight here as to what you CPers use that makes this process easy (and quality!).

The main things I am hoping to learn are:

1. When I download a movie, what software do you suggest to be able to put it onto a DVD. Formats? How can I make sure the movie looks like the store-bought versions?

2. If I have a DVD, how does one rip it so that I can put it on my iPod?
I have a bunch of flights to catch in the near future and would love to fill it up a bit.

______
In no way is this thread meant to condone the piracy of any digital rights.

I use Handbrake for my Mac to rip my DVDs for my iPod. I am pretty sure they have a PC version. Try that, it's free.

Try www.vcdhelp.com

They should have your answer and usually have alot of guides on there to walk you through the process step by step.

DVDFab Platinum rocks! It has a free one month trial, and it has allowed me to get DVDs onto my ipod that other software can't seem to deal with.

http://www.dvdfab.com/

Plus, with one pass encoding, it's relatively quick.

Second this. It's also really good at creating "DVD Backups" of movies

Not that I personally know anything about this, but I heard a program called "Convert X to DVD" is great for this - you can even create your own menus and stuff.

Is this restricted to iPods only (like only files that ipods can read) or can it be converted into say AVI or MPEG or something like that?

There's no such thing as iPod only format. It's mp4 or h264 video. The files from Apple are drm'd with Fairplay but they don't license it to anyone.

Edit: Looks like it will create mp4/avi's or divx files if you use the generic tab.

Practically any useful format. The sky's the limit. It even has special setting for different players, like the Zen W.

I don't rip DVD's much but whenever I do anything video related it's with VLC player. It's a tad on the complicated side to use, but I havn't seen anything else that comes close to it, especially for it's price (it's free).
