Yeah, I enjoy poking the Flames as much as anyone but if Yakupov is in a team's top 6 they're nowhere near a playoff spot.

You're comparing a veteran, Cup-winning playmaker to a kid in his second full NHL season. Ferland absolutely has shown he can play on the top line with those guys.

Who also might be done at an NHL playing level now.

Sure, but wasn't when he played on that line. His post seemed to suggest that because he wasn't as proficient as Hudler, he wasn't the right fit for that spot, which I disagree with. People often forget how young Ferland is.

Ferland may not be your typical 1st line player, but most teams in a cap era seem to spread the talent out.

You often see a team's top 6 forwards spread out over 3 lines, with another solid player being put on each line for balance.

But Ferland can play with and contribute to a line with Johnny and Monny.

But no one is suggesting he's one of Calgary's top 3 forwards.

Yep. Ferland provides a great compliment to that 1st line with his toughness and grit, plus he's got enough skill to keep up reasonably and effectively finish off offensive plays too.

Maybe let's give the guy more than 20 games on the top line, sprinkled with some much deserved PP time before making such claims?

Not to get in the middle of this debate, but Ferland is 25. Yes, he has developed late, but I'm not sure you really qualify as young when you were drafted 7 years ago.

Fair enough, but he's a young 25 (April birthday). I seem to recall he only started playing hockey in his mid-teens. He seems Giordano-ish in that late development curve.

But regardless, he's only really been in the lineup for two seasons and he's shown solid progression over that time. I'm excited to see what he brings next season!

"Raw" is probably a better word to use than "young" when describing Ferland in this respect. I particularly like the fact that he has improved every year since turning pro, and he continues to leave the impression that there is another level after every season.

Has this franchise hit rock bottom yet? 48 points is looking like a lofty goal next season.

Agreed, he definitely showed some really nice progression last year. I'm not sure I ever seen him being more than a 15-20 goal scorer, but there should still be some room to grow there.

At this point, Ferland is a better offensive player than Yakupov. I expect Yak to finish with the league's worst +/- if he plays the whole season.

They built one of the strongest teams of the late 90s by trading away former first overall picks. Now, they're building one of the worst teams of this decade by acquiring former first overall picks.

I wonder which first-overall pick has been teammates with the most other first-overall picks in his career? This will bring Yak to 5: Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, McDavid, MacKinnon, and Johnson.

Yakupov works hard and skates well but has the hockey sense of a fire hydrant. His best bet would be as a PK specialist and fourth liner. He should forget the offensive side of the puck and try to use his speed as an asset as a shutdown winger.

I'd really like to know what the hell they are thinking. I know they want to trade Duchene and Landeskog but how much is that going to help?

They were historically bad this season. And to me, their off season might be even worse. Bernier, Colin Wilson and Nail Yakupov as their "major" acquisitions. As of today, 3 NHL D under contract. And with 4OA they picked a project player out of the AJHL.

Obviously Sakic has some sort of plan. But I am genuinely curious as to what the hell this plan is.

I think Vegas will finish ahead of Colorado this year.

Don't disagree with a lot of that but don't have a problem with the Makar pick. In a weak draft he is arguably the most dynamic guy with the biggest upside. Although he played against lower competition, those that saw a lot of him seem to think the skills will translate at higher levels.
