Good, then the Flames could try to sign JVR in 2018. Him or Neal would be great.

They have to sign Nylander, and then Marner + Matthews after next year.

Maybe. But I am sceptical after Marleau's did not.

As for the contract, way too much money for someone his age. So glad the Flames didn't do that.
Let's run for a year with a couple dollars still in our jeans and see how: Bennett, Ferland, Jankowski, Foo, Lazar and the others do. If any of them take the next step - beautiful! If they don't, we can fill a hole at the deadline or next summer.

Really this is only a 2 year deal. Apparently I've seen that his 2019 salary drops to only 1.25 million. Arizona (or whoever is struggling to hit the floor at the time) will love to pick up a 6.25 million dollar cap hit that only costs 1.25 million in cash.
Marleau is a pretty solid player and he should be a good piece to add to the Leafs core, I think rhis signing will work out well, and especially so if JVR can be traded for a d-man.

They have over $5 million in bonus rollover for this season. This signing virtually guarantees they'll have a similar amount next year.
Then, after that, they get to start paying their young guys at full value.

This is why I knew he wouldn't sign here. I heard he was asking for 6+ .no way

77% of the contract is signing bonuses.

What is the impact of structuring the contract this way apart from giving him more $$ up front?

Does this signing make van Riemsdyk expendable? I'd love him here.

sure, but i'd be stunned if at least one isn't resigned... both had pretty solid years for them last year...
55 and 62 points... Toronto isn't going to let both go for nothing... so a trade is probably more likely

Now I'm a little sad our forward group won't get an upgrade, which I think it needed.
I hope we re-sign Chiasson

1. it is buyout resistant. As signing bonuses get paid in full regardless of buyout.
2. As signing bonuses are paid out on July 1st, he can retire on July 2nd of year 3 and only leave $1.25 mil on the table. Essentially getting paid 17.5 million for 2 years of playing for the Leafs. Leafs will still get the $6.25 mil cap hit, but they can/will probably trade it to a team like the Coyotes who need to reach the floor or have lots of cap space
Welcome to the new era of cap cheating contracts.

Awful contract, Leafs obviously think he can keep his game up but that's a massive risk. 38 by the time the season roles around and we've all seen how quickly +35 year olds can decline. Massive risk, would've just stayed the course.
Good for the Flames tho, didn't overpay for him and the Sharks are now weaker. Time to release the Janko
Other note, kind of odd the leafs didn't invest this money on a Dman. They don't need help scoring goals. Very odd

Cash up front is the main advantage.
If he was younger, it would also serve to make the contract virtually buy-out proof because signing bonuses are paid in full even on a buy-out. Since he's over 35, it's buy-out proof anyway because Toronto will carry the full cap hit no matter what.
One thing this does allow is for him to get traded on July 2, 2019 and the acquiring team would only owe him $1.25 million for the 2019-2020 season, but still carry his full cap hit for that year. In that scenario, the Leafs would pay him his $3 million signing bonus for the year on July 1, so all that would be owing is the remaining 1.25.

I would have thought the Leafs would have tried to upgrade their defense group before adding a forward of this age and ability. Going to have to win a lot of high scoring games.

Bahaha. Toronto? Does he consider them contenders in the next 2-3 years or something? Pretty far from California as well.
Clearly did it for the $. I hope he realizes for that cap hit he's signing up to be the new whipping boy in T.O. Have fun with that.
