And not that long ago they stripped him of his captaincy and wanted him to leave town. Then they keep him at a high wage anyway. I don't get it. Thought they would be happy to finally move on.

This is the cost of convincing Thornton to ignore multi year deals and come back for only a single year despite coming off some injury issues on top of his age.

Tied for 22nd all-time in points. 2nd only to Jagr amongst active players. One year removed from an 82 point season. Accepted a one year deal. That's how he became one of the highest paid FAs.

Multi year deals from who? LA? Anaheim? Those are the only other two teams I can see him signing with. He desperately wants to stay in SJ and retire a Shark and the Sharks just handed him everything he wanted. Good job Joe!

Respect people!

Joe didn't want to move his family to chase a cup, and the Sharks paid the guy who likely put the franchise on the map. Nobody is cheating each other here. Everybody is playing fair. The way it should be!

The Sharks I am sure made this deal with full awareness of the player, he is not an unknown commodity to them.

I hope Joe does well, except of course in games against the Flames.

Joe might get 50 points. Joe might get 80 points.

Wouldn't be surprised with either outcome.

Well holy jeez. $8 million. How many teams would have come near that, even for a 1 year deal.

Sure, why not. If you are not planning on using the cap space anywhere else this season then it's a no risk situation.

$8M?!? That's a lot of money for a 50 point forward who wanted to stay.

I guess the Sharks have the cap space and really had no choice after losing Marleau.
