Default Java Script vs Java

My 13 year old asked for a book on computer programming, (he is studying animation in school).

I studied C++ a long time ago and have forgotten more then I can remember.

For you animation junkies out there what books, ideologies would you offer up to 13 year old you today?

Any help is appreciated

Animation is (or can be) different than programming, does he want to do animations with programming? If so maybe Javascript if he wants to make web based games or something.

For jumping in, better to pick something that's interesting and engaging rather than a specific language. My kid wants to learn Java because he likes Minecraft for example.

Scratch is also a cool tool to learn the basics of programming without having to learn a language.
