Icon48 NHL considering Canada vs Rest of the World "Ryder Cup" in 2018

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
NHL is also considering a Canada vs Rest of the World "Ryder Cup" style event in 2018.

As a negotiating ploy with the IOC and IIHF for Olympic participation.

The other question is...how?
Not like you can play a bunch of singles matches to get points.

Because no other country in the world can match us best on best right now. And Canada vs the rest of the world would be awesome over a seven game series.

That's why.

If it was Canada vs. the World, we'd lose far more often than not. North America vs. Europe, sure, but at the same time, I doubt I would get as excited cheering for my continent as I would my country. Particularly given this will probably be held entirely in Toronto as well.

Roughly half of all NHLers are Canadian, so it sounds about right to me.

And if it were NA against Europe, the breakdown would be about 75-25, pretty heavily in favour of NA.

I, for one, think this would be awesome (and pretty fair)

I'd rather they just play in the Olympics every 4 years, than trying to force-feed all these lame tournaments.

Sure, but the NHL is done with the Olympics. So take your pick:

Olympics featuring nobodies or World Cup/Ryder Cup featuring the best.

I don't recall there being anything official on the Olympics being done? Like anything else, the league will find a way to squeeze more money out of the deal making it impossible not to go.

These other events will be nothing close to the quality the Olympics offers so I'd pretty much rather have nothing at that point if the Olympics are lost. I'd wager we'd all be looking at play probably in between the yearly WHC and the last World cup (which were/are both snooze fests at best).

I'd rather they stop trying to be diplomatic by inviting weak sister nations, make it a double round robin of Canada, US, Russia, Sweden, and Finland, with a gold medal game.

Edit - That's if the 2016 format fails or is abandoned.

I wouldn't bet on it. Bettman is good at getting blood from a stone, but the IOC is the dictionary definition of intransigence. If all these plans are going ahead, it is because the NHL is getting nowhere with the IOC.

First of all, I agree about the Olympics - that is what I want to see more than anything else.

Second, I agree about 'all' these tournaments - the last thing you want to do is water it down with stupid gimmicks.

But if there is going to be a tournament outside the Olympics, this sounds awesome to me! I could see the pressure and bragging rights building with each iteration.

Canada is clearly the class of the hockey field. And as such, games against Czech Republic or Finland - hell, even Russia in recent tournaments - really aren't that exciting because Canada is the decided and overwhelming favourite. It's more of a 'we better not blow this' situation than a real test of supremacy.

But Canada against the field? Coin toss. Not only that, but Canadians would want to rise to the challenge - hell, it's our game. And the rest of the world would be motivated to stop them.

I could actually see this getting to Rider Cup-like levels of drama.

(as long as it isn't just one of a whole string of gimmicky, ratings-chasing events)
