It would be just like if Paul Byron got waived, transferred somewhere else and turned into Gaudreau. What the what?

Nobody thought he'd become anywhere near what he did. Just bad luck on our part.

He was a 4th longer and a healthy scratch for Tampa too. Then the coach have him one look on the top line and BOOM

Button made tons of bad decisions. I don't see how St. Louis is one, if you read the rest of the thread or saw him play in Calgary.

Will people please stop saying he was waived or off contract. His contract was bought out by Craig Button. We paid him to go away! Excellent job, Craig!

It's true they bought him out. Aft first exposing him in the 2000 expansion draft without any team picking him up and no doubt trying to trade him.

He just wasn't that good in Calgary (he was good in St. John though).

Let's be honest when he got released none of us were up in arms or rioting in the streets. We all thought he was a midget with no future. Its just convienent to blame some one else with the benefit of hindsight. Tampa just fluked out.

I was a big fan of Martin St. Louis back then. He was a goal scorer in college and he was also good in the minor league. Flames coaching staff didn't really gave him a good chance in showing what the guy can do. He was playing on the 4th line mostly or was a healthy scratch. I remembered being ticked off because they were playing a terrible bigger player more than him a lot. I guess coaching staff was just not a big fan of a small guy back then. I was a bit ticked off for losing him for nothing but at the same time I was glad he was going to get a chance somewhere else.

If Button was stupid, so were the gms of Columbus and Minnesota, along with the teams that passed on MSL after he became a UFA.

The buyout was for the rest of the season I think, or one year at most.

I was really impressed with St. Louis nearing the end of the 2000 season. I don't think anyone would have expected him to raise his game the way he did, but he was a great energy player for us. I was pretty steamed when Button came in and bought him out.

It doesn't really matter if other teams passed on him as well. He was an undrafted older prospect that other teams (or outsiders hired from other organizations) would easily miss. The fact of the matter is, we had him and he was showing promise in our system. It would be like buying out Jooris right now.

No it wouldn't. Jooris has shown far more than St. Louis did in a Flames uniform. Jooris is also getting higher quality minutes, mind you.

More like Giordano. St. Louis showed much more in his career than Byron has so far. St. Louis was well thought of by Al Coates and I gotta think there was a little bit of the new guy making his stamp by cutting loose the previous GMs guy.

As has been said St. Louis didn't get much of a chance on a scoring line. He was stuck behind Iginla and Bure on RW.

Iggy and St. Louis would've been one hell of a duo .

I was so surprised that St.Louis scored me so many goals in NHL<insert year hear> and yet the Flames didn't give him any playing time. Just by playing EA's NHL game I knew he was going to be a gem.
