Are people that concerned about the garbage at home? It just seems to me that you are sacrificing freshness and wasting time at the store. Then you end up with 3 people trying to all peel their corn, so nobody else can just grab and go.
I figure there must be some other benefit that I am missing.

People are scared they're going to get a bad one. They also want to save two cents by not paying for the weight of the husk. Next up, peeling bananas in the store.
