Yeah this feels like a missed opportunity, but I guess they couldn't get Mercer and just don't value Holtz as highly.

This tells me that there is no selling high. Conroy would take an overpay and that did not materialise.

I am glad he communicated clearly with Markstrom so the team can focus on pushing forward.

In other words, if you want him it’s Mercer and a first.

Hopefully just a sales tactic. It is a mistake to keep him if a trade is possible.

Ullmark

Markstrom

And then you also have the following veteran free agents:

Cam Talbot: .913
Jonathan Quick: .916
Anthony Stolarz: .925
Laurent Brossoit: .922
Alex Nedeljkovic: .915
Kaapo Kahkonen: .901
MA Fleury: .899

Suddenly teams looking for a goalie in a trade have other top end options available potentially if Ullmark and Saros hit the market. And while none of those free agents are long term solutions, the Devils might think it's better to keep the assets, and just sign a veteran that can play 40 games and share the net with Daws.

I've made way too many posts about this in the past week, but I really can't shake the feeling that the Flames really missed an opportunity to sell Markstrom at peak value to the Devils a week or two ago, and potentially were too focused on a single player as the return.
Quoting myself from an other thread here...but I don't know how any team could look at the potential goalie market in the offseason and go "Yeah there will be a bigger market for him in the offseason"

The goalie market is generally soft in the offseason because there are lots of options for teams to go the cheap route available for short term looks.

It's not like Markstrom is 28 like Saros either...he's 34.

Sell now while you have a motivated buyer that if rumors are true made a very aggressive offer.

If Markstrom takes this team to the playoffs his value is going to be higher then it is now.

I sure hope that's what it is because I hate negligent asset management in the name of "message sending". I really hope this is pre-deadline posturing done to leverage a higher return.

“Selling high”

Like anyone has a clue about what’s been offered
Mostly everyone knows we turned down a first for Tanev too

It didn't sound like Markstrom really wanted to move and he is under contract for a couple of more seasons. I get why it could upset the team to trade players who don't need or want to be traded when they signed to play there and have a full NMC.

Good on Conroy.

Shows me hes not going to be bullied into moving off what he believes is fair value for Markstrom.

New Jersey has his price, not interested in meeting it? F off then. Its not like Markstrom is a UFA that we are going to lose for nothing.

Ball is in your court Fitz.

Lets be realistic here. This is not a playoff team, and certainly not one without Hanifin and Tanev down the stretch.

I think Conroy overplayed his hand here. Markstrom is a great goalie who does nothing for our timeline. He's too good for where this roster is now, and too old to be apart of the future.

Hopefully it's just posturing. Trading him three weeks ago would have been the play.

Do we really think that the GM that has moved Toffoli, Zadorov, Lindholm and Tanev for futures this year is now cratering his asset value to send a message?

I think we can assume this is either posturing, or they honestly believe they will get more value in the summer, no?

I hope it's a ruse, because while it may send a message to the team, it also sends a message to the fans as well, and not a great one.

This team should be doing everything it can to take advantage for the future. Stop settling for mediocrity, and make the hard decisions.
