I'm trying to think what another teams Backlund would be... Jordan Caron with Boston? He's a RW power forward that hasn't really worked out, but showed good flashes to start his career. He's a Weisbrod pick, but Boston would need to give us more than just him in a trade, people were calling him a waiver wire option at the start of the year.
Most other "Backlund" guys on other teams have already been traded from their original drafting team, now that I look back at the past few draft... I guess that the Flames have actually been pretty patient with Backs, with his injuries and all.

They are both producing virtually identical numbers so far this season....main difference being that Colborne has played 60 less total minutes than Backlund so far this season, and Colborne has only played 37 NHL games to Backlund's nearly 200.
Given their pedigrees, and experience levels, Backlund should be head and shoulders ahead of Colborne right now IMO, not neck and neck with him....add in the fact that Colborne is a big body as well, and I can see why the Flames would choose to move forward with Colborne over Backlund.

Brett Connolly comes to mind, although Flames might have to add a bit.

If Backs gets traded, I expect that he'll turn into a very solid two-way second line centre and we'll all wonder why he couldn't do that with the Flames....

How would it be fair? He's 25 years old, injury prone, has consistently had difficulty holding down a spot on a bad team, and underperformed when given opportunities. Teams don't just throw away second round picks for that.
You only have to look as far as our own roster to see what that kind of player can return in a trade - when Feaster flipped a 4th rounder for TJ Galiardi.

Jonathan Drouin comes to mind. Former high draft pick, just hasn't been able to translate his talent to the NHL. Maybe his value is dropping...

Yep. Considering how little 2 of our centers have played in the NHL Backs should look head over heals better than them. Considering Feaster said that Stajan would be a 3rd line center on a good team, Backlund should look way better than him. He does not at best he looks on par with Colbourne/ Sean and looks worse than Stajan. The competition he is up against is not all that great. Backlund should be noticable to even a blind guy that he is the best center on the ice on most nights but in reality he is not.

As someone who has been unimpressed with Backlund overall in his tenure with the Flames, I think this would be giving up on him too early.

Oh easily, but I can see where he's going with that. People don't realize that Galiardi was picked in the second round of the same draft as Backlund. He's never been as touted, but he's been successful for his pick. Also shows the kind of player we might get if we try to just trade Backlund for a 2nd rounder though, good chance it would end up being a Galiardi type player.

I think if we trade him we will lose the trade.
The only way it would be acceptable is if we receive a decent young D-man back. Say like trading him to Buffalo for one of their many good D prospects.
I don't see why they don't try him out as a winger before dealing him.

At this point, what else can you do? He's been given multiple chances to prove he's worth it, and he just hasn't.
Always liked him, and I'll be happy to see him reach his potential somewhere else, but for whatever reason these things happen it's not going to be here.

I think backlund ends up in Detroit. Seems like the perfect candidate for Holland and Babcock to mold into an effective 2nd line centre.

Backlund was just another failed experiment who the Flames had high hopes for but never materialized, like a Dustin Boyd.

Detroits probably one of those teams, I remember Babcock was quite impressed with Backlund back in 2010

I think Stempniak stays, but I agree Cammy will be moved.
I want Backlund to stay. I think he can be an effective #3 center. His defensive game is actually pretty good.

Not having a great year points wise, and the coach relegating him to the 4th line so he can't even do anything about it...sounds like a great time to get max value for a player.
If you're going to trade him, at least wait till he's gone on a bit of a streak. You know, all that buy low/sell high crap...

I agree although I feel management has given him rope and this may simply be one of those situations where the player isn't a good fit with the organization for whatever reason. I would hope if they do trade him that it's not for chump change and they get an asset or quality draft picks.
That said I'm certainly not worried about him ever becoming a top player and haunting the Flames if he goes elsewhere as I just don't think he's the complete package offensively. Could be a useful player if used right though.
