Just another loser, I feel terrible about the families of the victim.
Don't think I would mind seeing the death penalty applied here.

WHOA!!!! Crazy... Literally down the street from where I used to live.
A lot of people are trying to connect this with ISIS. Apparently he was fired because he was a recent Islam convert and was trying to push others into converting. I'm not personally saying this is wrong. I'm just stating what I am hearing.

It will be interested to see the reason for his termination. I doubt that it was about him becoming a Muslim, as much as his pushiness in converting people made them uncomfortable.
I doubt that a mental illness defense would work here. His justification for killing seems to follow some logic.

Not even necessarily that religion is stupid so much as what some people do in its name.

Look, I'm not Muslim. I'm not religious. I'm completely agnostic. And I am very critical of most religious institutions and the regressive influences that they have on their communities. But I don't see how anyone can prove that there is any sort of causal nexus between psychotic behavior like this and the idea of religion itself (or any particular religion). Cruelty like this is carried out all over the world everyday by agnostics, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews alike.
I am not a forensic psychiatrist, and I know absolutely nothing about this individual case, but I strongly suspect that, even if there was no such thing as Islam, or there was no such thing as religion period, this person would have been inspired by the secret messages in Michael Bay's "Transformers" films to harm people he disliked or distrusted or believed were conspiring against him.

Agreed, Religion does not make people crazy.
But combining crazy people, with religion, can be dangerous.
Religion gives them a reason and self justification to take drastic measures.
It's no coincidence that this newly found muslim decided to behead people in protest. That is what the religion preaches, so, he felt he was within his religious right, or duty, to do just that. Maybe if he hadn't been Muslim, and was Catholic, he'd have crucified his victim(s) instead.
The concern I have, is the threats being made by ISIS, and their obvious ability to recruit internationally, a person like the accused, is ideal for what they are trying to accomplish, and this first attack may only be the first of what could be many if ISIS has it's way.

Is Evangelism or the Islamic equivalent of it part of the Islamic doctrine?

Combining crazy people with any kind of stimulus and it can be dangerous. There have been killers who got their instructions from their dogs, or their rejection from woman or anything. saying that religion combined with insanity just to make a anti-religion point is kind of disingenuous.

Every religion has an element of evangelism or "spreading the word"
I would say that Islam and Christianity both have it as fairly key tenants.

Charles Mason was hardly a religious killer claiming that he believed a race war was coming and wanted to spark it.
The Son of Sam killer received instructions from his dog.
Several killers have murdered for some pretty insane reasons.
Not everything is about religion bad.
I would argue that this guys religion was gained by watching the news and finding some feeling of excitement about a perverse group like ISIS more then following Islam.
