900ish. Just a random shop advertising online, though. A1 alarm is quoting 1200, and I have more confidence in them, so I think the extra 300 is worth it. I'm leaning towards using them for the whole package.

I just don't see the value in a monitored system. I don't think they stop break ins. It just makes the criminals act quicker. In my old neighbourhood I had the two houses on one side broken into and one of the other side. Mine never was. I was the only one with a large dog. Other than that I had self monitored cameras just for evidence sake.

This whole United Alarm thing is pretty shady it seems like... I mean, it's their equipment, they're "renting" it to you, but they're suggesting that they have a "one year warranty" on it and after that the homeowner is responsible for repairs and service. What the #### is that? It's your equipment. You don't offer a warranty on it. That's not a thing. If I buy a piece of property I can get a warranty that it's not going to break, but if I'm renting it, it's still your property; it's on you if it breaks. That's at your risk. This is screwy enough that I feel like I'd end up sending these guys a demand letter at some point, I think I'll just skip it.

I'm sure there are zero back doors in that system.

Even if there are, the average home invader isn't going to be exploiting them.

I am sure even with the standard Honeywell equipment ADT, United, etc use there are backdoors. Heck, on a wired system you used to be able to just cut the phone line to disable it (probably still can).

I think on a retail level, Chinese security solutions are fine. Just make sure you have a solid password, because hackers and pranksters are likely to exploit the cameras with weak passwords or no passwords at all before they try bothering with you.

But for larger businesses and institutions and governments, they would put themselves at great risk by using these Chinese cameras.

Or don't expose them directly to the Internet, put them behind a firewall.
