The Islanders have really acquired Rielly
Some of you might dislike this deal... but I don't
To the Minnesota Wild:
LW Josh Bailey ($1.75 million for 1 year)
14th-overall
22nd-overall
To the New York Islanders:
D Morgan Rielly ($1.35 million for 1 year)
46th-overall
New lineup:
Radim Vrbata - Frans Nielsen - Thomas Vanek
Teuvo Teravainen - Derick Brassard - Jonathan Marchessault
xxxxxxx - Conor Sheary - Michael Frolik
Leo Komarov - Derek Ryan - Bryan Rust
Morgan Rielly - Adam Larsson
Paul Martin - Josh Manson
Thomas Hickey - Chris Wideman
Kevan Miller
Craig Anderson
Chad Johnson
If you're wondering what that 'xxxxxxx' is, well, 49th-overall is available.

Reilly is my boy and even I think that's too much for him. When he doesn't work out for you than I'll take him

And Scorp jumps out to the early lead in the 2017/18 Risebrough voting.

Not sure why people think this is a bad deal. Why would I take anything less for a young #1 dman?
Bailey is a 3rd liner. The picks are mid to late - therefore the chances of me landing a top 4 dman or top 6 forward are 50/50 at best.
So in the long-run, Scorp assures himself of having a #1 dman, in contract control for many years. I gain some assets and bullets in the chamber from a draft POV.
But why would I move him for something like Bailey+14.
This time of year 1sts start to rise in value, but they are still what they are - magic beans that may or may not pay off.

I see your reasoning but for me, the deal looks a little lop-sided. Bailey may be a "3rd liner" but he put up 56 points last season. Pretty darn good in my opinion. No knock on Rielly but I definitely think you won this deal on paper. We'll have to wait and see how the picks prove out.

I think the jury is still out on Reilly being a #1 d-man. Had a really rough year last season and offensively seems to be a 30 point guy.
Josh Bailey is certainly not a 3rd liner. 2nd highest TOI for forwards on the Islanders and 56 points is certainly not 3rd line material.

If Bailey's performance holds at that level it is a better deal for me, but historically he is more of a 30 point performer.
I enjoy these debates as I think it is fascinating to discuss value. I'm curious what people think would have been fair.
Again why would I trade a young #1 dman for something like Bailey+14 (if people think that's fair).

lets be honest... Jake Gardiner is their #1 d-man. Willing to let him go for 3 top 10 1sts people, get your offers in!

I'm not questioning why you would do this deal.

Steep price to pay for a guy I don't think will be a legit #1 D.

IDK but for me, I think you probably received 1 draft pick too many in this deal. I could be wrong. I've made some doozy deals in the last year. Just my .02.

I don't value Bailey very high so I actually think this deal is pretty fair...I actually like it from the Isles persepective as they get the best players in the deal for a bunch of question marks.

My counter would be to examine the quality of player that one gets in the mid and late 1st historically.
It ain't great.
Bailey+14 or Bailey+22 would not have even given me pause for thought.
Would you trade Jacob Trouba for Bailey+14?

In a weak draft I think this is actually fairly decent for Reilly. He will be a stud, he was on Team NA and played very well last year. Really comes down to what you think of Bailey, I think he is more of a 3rd liner, I doubt he produces at the same rate this year. So I think it is worth it to add a mid and late 1st to upgrade to a younger D man with big potential. I'd call it a fair deal but I am a big believer in Reilly and it always pays to add young studs like that to an organization.

The thing about Rielly is that many players in toronto are overvalued, I see him as a number 2 dman. I still think wild win the deal, but feel Rielly is overrated to an extent

Agreed, with the 1st round picks. With a weak draft, these type of picks are more of a project type of a pick.
Could be difficult drafting prospects who will make the NHL.
