I saw this from Jiri and wasn't sure if there is a thread on this yet, but I was wondering what are CPer's GOAT's in the various sports. Using Jiri's original list (with a couple additions) I put together who are my GOAT's.

NFL: Brady (though so even before Superbowl LI)
MLB: Babe Ruth (there are probably better players throughout history but I can't help it, I guess the lore wins me over)
NHL: Gretzky
Women's Hockey: Hayley Wickenheiser
NBA: Jordan
WNBA: Diana Taurasi (Don't really know, but ESPN tells me this)
PGA: Jack
LPGA: Annika Sörenstam
ATP: Roger
WTA: Serena
Lacrosse: I don't know enough about Lacrosse to comment and couldn't find a list on google to convince me one way or the other, although I've heard John Tavares's uncle is/was really good.

NFL: Toss up between Walter Payton/Joe Montana/Jim Brown
NBA: Michael Jordan
MLB: Willie Mays
NHL: Toss up between Gretzky/Lemieux/Bosse/Orr
Women's Hockey: Don't really know enough to comment. I would suspect Wickenheiser.
WNBA: Wouldn't even know where to start.
PGA: Jack Nicklaus or Tiger in his prime
WPGA: Sorenstam
ATP: Federer
WTA: Steffi Graf
Lacrosse: Don't have much a knowledge base, but since the Roughnecks have been in town, likely Toth.

this is where goat conversations sometimes go off track. do you consider the sum total of their career accomplishments, including their rise, peak and decline, or do you put more weight on how high their absolute prime was?

in my opinion it's the former, which is why I don't think Tiger quite makes it, unless he has some sort of miraculous rebirth. it's also why I hate things like PPG/GPG averages being used, because that favors players that retired early.

I'm not a golf expert by any means, it just always seemed to me that Tiger played in a time when there was a lot of competition, and he dominated. There was a lot of good golfers that likely will be made irrelevant in the history books in that time period because he was crushing everything.

I assume as a Kobe fan there's no way you'd put LeBron ahead of him, even though that is the pretty strong non-Kobe or LeBron hater consensus. Likewise it seems the consensus is Duncan will go down slightly higher than Kobe. Actually making your teammates better is pretty important, unless you are Mike (who is still so many levels higher than Kobe).

MLB: Mariano Rivera
NHL: Mario Lemieux
NBA: #45
Golf: Tiger (I think we forget how ridiculous prime Tiger really was since he's a hack now)
Tennis: RF
Soccer: Ronaldinho/Messi
Olympics: Michael Phelps

BONUS! All-time greatest championship performance: MadBum 2014

NFL: Tom Brady (Football is a team sport, but it will be a long time before any player especially a QB wins 5 Super Bowls).

MLB: Babe Ruth (no debate what so ever. The greatest offensive player in history. MLB Career leader in Slugging %, MLB Career leader in OPS. He is 4th all time in runs scored, 3rd in home runs, 2nd in RBI's, all this despite being in the pitching rotation for the Red Sox for the first three years of his career. He was also a pretty good pitcher posting a career ERA of 2.28 and a winning percentage of .671. There is a misconception that the Babe was a big fat guy who could only hit home runs. But there wasn't a lot of video footage of him from his prime in the early 1920's. Most of the video footage and pictures we see of him today are from War Bond selling tours during World War II when he was in his late 40's. The Babe was an athlete, who could run, throw, hit, and hit with power.

NBA: Michael Jordan (6 rings, very athletic, and played both sides of the court).

NHL: Wayne Gretzky (his records will never be broken, but he played in an era of expansion where the talent pool was watered down and the game wasn't as fast and structured as it is today).

Babe Ruth's lore and numbers are very impressive, but it's hard to consider him the GOAT when he played in a time where only white guys were allowed in the majors.

It's a very valid point, and one that will be argued to the end of time. However, no one, of any race, has been able to put up the type of career numbers that Babe Ruth did. Barry Bonds record setting season numbers are Ruthian. One thing interesting is the length of Bonds home runs and the length of outfield walls compared to when Ruth played. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head, but I read a very interesting book a couple years ago called "The year Babe Ruth hit 108 Home Runs". In the book they point out that a lot of Bonds Home Runs wouldn't of cleared the fence back in Ruth's era. And in Ruth's era he hit a lot of 450 foot doubles because of the huge out fields in the Polo Grounds (where the Yankees played in the early 20's until Yankee Stadium was built) and Yankee Stadium to name a few. Short porch in right in Yankee Stadium, but spray charts show that he hit home runs all over the field.

Interesting topic none the less, and someone like Josh Gibson could have matched or surpassed Ruth's numbers, we will never know.

It's unfortunate about the injuries to Griffey Jr. or I think we'd be talking about him in GOAT territory.

Gretzky has more assist than anyone else has total points. That stat alone should blow my mind. Add in the stanley cups and everything he has done to grow the sport, how can you argue anyone was better

NHL-Gretzky
Soccer-Cruyf (Messi is a touch overrated)
F1-Senna
CFL-Flutie
AFL-Gary Ablett Jr.

Every other sport is tediously boring. Except maybe downhill skiing.

The only clear ones out of the major sports are Jordan and Gretzky IMO.
