I've heard a few reviews mention how the Nexus 7 can be held with one hand "like a paperback book".

So I'm thinking the fragmenting of the tablet arena is becoming a bit more defined. The 7" isn't simply a lower priced alternative, but it is also an "easy to carry one handed" tablet; something that gives more screen real estate than a smartphone (so is easier to read or watch video on) yet still small enough to comfortably hold/balance on one hand.

Smart phone screen sizes go up to 4.7" (iPhone 4s), 4.8" (Galaxy Nexus), 5.3" (Galaxy Note)

then it jumps to the Kindle Fire/Nexus 7 and the sizes as shown in FanIn80's post.

Looks like you get a $25 Google play gift card when you pre-order the Nexus 7 from Futureshop.

That Mini IPad looks useless to me, it looks like it would be too big to hold in 1 hand comfortably so really they are just trading off a bit of screen size for cost.

I loved the 7 inch form of the Blackberry Playbook, unfortunately it didn't do much. Excited for this smaller tablet. The iPad doesn't leave the home, it's just too big.

NW and NE sold out as well, I almost got the last one in the NW by phone but someone grabbed it and was in line when the sales guy went to grab it.

So what happened, did they break the release date? I thought it wasn't until the 23rd?

Online orders are out of stock too.

Edmonton had one but wouldn't let me buy it and ship it to me "because it's the first day and it's a popular item".

I don't understand that at all, what's the difference who buys it??

If someone's buying one in Edmonton, buy two and I'll pay you for one

Apparently it is out of stock in most retailers across North America. Selling faster than imagined.

Not sure what Google anticipated, but rumor has it they sold out on what they initially ordered from Acer.

I want one too. Might wait a bit though.

Maybe I should put the one I just got on Kijiji, think someone would give me $500 for it?

EDIT: Oh and it's ASUS, not Acer.

Setup was easy, Netflix works but I don't know if it offers HD, the show I was watching in HD on my computer didn't give any indication of going HD on the device. That would suck.

Kind of miss the home button on the iPad, having to use the button on the side to wake it is kind of annoying so far.

Have to load it with some books to try reading with it, and I have to figure out what video formats it supports.

It did drop the wireless connection once, hopefully a fluke and not an indication of future behaviour.

Picked one up from MemEx NE yesterday. I'd agree with most of the reviews out there in that it is a very good device at this price point. Of course it lacks in power and pixels per inch compared to the iPad but overall excellent value for money. Asus and Google did a great job with the design and build of it.

I'm also trying to figure out what video formats are supported (seems as if xvid is not natively supported). Also I'm having trouble getting most apps to rotate to landscape and back to portrait. The gyroscope works in the Super Monkey Ball 2 game app but even when I whip the thing in Chrome, it doesn't rotate. I still haven't figured out the gesture that makes it rotate. I will work on this today.

Looks like it's H.264 (mp4), but there's also VLC media player which should support a lot more formats. Have to try a few to see if they're playable at HD resolution.

I know I'm in the minority, but I really enjoy the bigger screens on the smart devices. Phones, tablets, whatever. Everything is so small nowadays. It's weird, it's not my eyesight, I have great eyesight, I just like the big bright screen and icons and apps you can actually interact with instead of mistyping or misfingering everything your trying to do.
