Now if they are being asked to eat 50% then that's a different discussion where I do think another 2nd or something like Casey would need to be added...but I really hope the Devils don't just go to another team then because I do think getting one of those one forwards and their 1st would be a coup.

Flames should be pushing hard, they are not the ones who should be desperate to make a move...trade could easily be made in the summer. Cap space is a huge asset and tying it up and a retention spot for 2 and a bit years should be costly.

Mercer, sure, but if it’s Holtz then devils need to add. For me the target is Mercer, 1st, vanecek and Casey with 25-33% retained but I would be good with a lesser prospect than Casey

Has value as a long-term asset instead of a short-term one.
He's a guy that a re-building team can give ice time too, pump his value, and then potentially move on at some point. Probably not a core piece on a winner.
But the kid has a shot and hands. No doubt about that. So keep bringing in skill guys like that looking for more of a chance. Some will hit. Others won't.

That's a significant overpay for Tanev.

Would any of you trade zary + conditional 1st for Gibson?
IMO that is equivalent or even more favorable than the proposed markstrom trade from NJ perspective.
If that's on the table for real we should take it and run.

Touché, but if you've noticed I've taken a step back from cheering for the refs as I have no idea what is or isn't a penalty anymore. It's like I was calling a completely different sport.

Bennett ruined the franchise's 10-20 decade.

I am higher on Holtz than most, but those are not equivalent deals.

John Gibson? The Ducks would sell him for a song if they could, like practically give him away. The problem with Gibson is he is signed for four more years at 6.4M and the Ducks have made it clear they have no interest in retaining money on him. Second, his numbers have not been very good for about 4 years now. Third, he also has injury issues. The Ducks have tried to shop him around this year with no interest shown from what I have heard.

Thing is it's all relative.
In the offseason Mercer and a 1st would have been seen as an absolute coup even with 50% retained on Markstrom.
In the end it's all about balance.
I feel like in the end Mercer + 1st + Vanecek for Markstrom at $4.5M is very fair and still a win for the Flames. Would be the best return on a goalie since Schneider returned a top 10 pick for Vancouver.

That is why I think Mercer + a 1st is way too tilted in the Flames favour. I don't really think Markstrom is the goalie that gets the best return since 2013.

But it's Mercer + 1st for Markstrom and $6.7M ($1.5M/year in retention, and $3.7m cap dump of Vanecek) in cap over two years...which then makes more fair because that $6.7M is worth somewhere between a 1st and 2nd.
Its when there is another sweetener for retention / taking Vanecek that I think really throws the imbalance in the Flames favour.

Cap is opening up next summer though. I feel like a team will take Vancek for a season for a relatively cheap dump cost and hope he turns it around.

If the Flames were in their win-now window, and were a goalie away from being good, and Gibson was perceived to be that goalie, and Zary was deemed to be expendable because of the guys in front of him in the lineup, then hell yeah, I would do the trade.
You have to consider context for where the teams are at that time.

I wonder if NSH would do Holtz + 1st for Saros.
I just can't see the Devils giving up Mercer.

I had heard that NSH was asking for the moon - even worse than the Flames. But I cannot confirm that, just read it somewhere.

Yeah, not sure. Really depends how they view Holtz. I think the biggest thing is do the Devils want commit long term to Saros or have faith in Daws

Tampa, on points percentage, is hanging onto the 2nd wild card in the east with a team that will desperately need young talent in the next few years. They're not going to throw away a bunch of picks for a Tanev rental to be swept by their state rivals in the first round.
