I have read a number of articles that call the Motorola G5 the best budget phone it right now. Don't think you can really go wrong there. One+ would be what I look at next but I think they are a little pricer, more mid level I think.

Is used a possibility? Not sure how old and requirements but there are usually a bunch of decent older phones for sale. A Nexus 5 which is a great phone could probably be had for $100 or less.

Shoot I still have my old Nexus 5 sitting in a drawer. Since they're not updating the software on it anymore I'd left it to die. it's a bday gift so I'd rather not go used. G5+ it is then.

Learn to root and add custom recovery to the N5 and it will be a whole new phone. You can do it all in about 30 minutes. Something to play around with.

But for a birthday yes, get something new.

This has probably been answered in here but is it worth it to spring for the Pixel XL vs the Pixel. I have an offer through work right now where I can get the pixel for $0 and the XL for $150. One of my favourite phones was my Note 4 so size isn't a big issue for me. I'm also pretty keen on getting into Daydream.

Apparently the XL is better for Daydream (better resolution, less light bleed).

Otherwise, they're pretty much identical (screen resolution and battery size being the main differences).

Well, bugger it all. Dropped my S5 this afternoon, it bounced off a curb and now I have the black screen of death; screen is intact (no cracks etc), it's just effed. Even the Otterbox didn't help. Oh well.

It turns on, it rings, I get notifications, all of it. I just can't see it. So, off to the mall we go to get a new one because given our particular situation, medically speaking, I can't not have a phone/be without one. It's also the primary number for all the girl's specialists so...

Damn, wish this hadn't happened just yet. I was trying to hold out for the S8 but now I go decide if it's the S7 Edge or the Pixel. Hopefully they can transfer all my stuff, somehow, to the S7E (which is likely the route I'll end up going), or I'm up poop creek without a paddle or a canoe.

The S7 is a great phone and you should be able to get it at a decent price with the release of the 8.

Any android phone should use Google to back things up so switching phones should be a breeze. Photos, apps, contacts etc should all move over. If you haven't activated Google to back up that's a little different story. If you don't you should start.

I ended up with the S7. Steered away from the Edge for a couple of reasons. I did do backups to Google but for whatever reason, I can't access the most recent backup which happened about 2 hours before I dropped my phone. It's not a big deal. I'll just go back on Monday and get them to walk me through it - they offered to do it there last night, but google wasn't recognizing my password until I was at home on our WiFi. So I'll just go back. My contacts I backed up differently, so those I was able to get back immediately, just by syncing, so that was awesome.

I really am only concerned about getting the pictures off the phone or downloading the backup - I had it set to back up pictures but we'll see what it looks like when I'm able to access it. I'm going to take the S5 to get fixed anyway, because once it's fixed, it will likely become my daughter's phone. She can put a pay and talk on it, and pay for it herself, and then we can switch the number over in all her medical files, for her specialists, etc, as primary contact and just keep mine as back-up.

I cleaned out my husband's side table and found his old iPhone 4 that he thought he lost 3 years ago () and the charger, so we're charging it now to see if it will still work - it appears it's working but we'll test it more once it's fully charged. If it's working ok, then we'll set it up as a pay and talk simply to keep as a "house" phone - we don't need it to be able to download apps, blah blah blah - just need a number, you know? If it works, then we can drop the landline almost immediately.

I got my G6 last weekend. I came from a Nexus 6P.

This phone feels a lot smaller in the hand than the 6P but the same screen size. Feels solid too. Very happy with it so far.

I do miss not having front facing speakers but everything else is great.

I love the camera(s). Especially the wide angle lense. It is very cool.

Very minor complaint but I don't understand the decision to remove choice when it comes to customization. It's been kind of weird what is arbitrarily added/taken off as options with Samsung's quick action and other settings.

One specific example is how I'm no longer allowed to have my mobile tether as a toggle option after 7.0. Before that was the Download Booster (using mobile data together with wifi for faster speed/lower data use). Just strange decisions on and off.

Sorry if this has been asked a dozen times already but is there any need to install an antivirus app on cell phones? Strikes me as something I should have installed.

If so, which one?

Definitely.

Do you have one installed in your car too? How about your pants?

I can install multi-layered antivirus protection on all of your clothing and vehicles today, over the internet, for the low, low price of seven easy payments of $199.99!

(no, you don't need antivirus on your phone)

I just bought a G5+ from Amazon, hasn't arrived yet, but I agree the specs on the phone are amazing for the price you pay. I'm on Freedom, so it is one of the few phones with Band 66 compatibility, which is what Freedom's new LTE network will be once it rolls out in Calgary (supposedly in the summer).

How's battery life been? I'm taking a hard look at this phone as it's only $200 on a 2 year vs $550 or so for a Pixel/S8.

It does have a slightly outdated Snapdragon 821 though....but as I don't game much I'm assuming it won't matter.

This or a Oneplus3T....

I ended up getting an S7 edge. I ordered one from Dubai. It's the international version which has the faster Exosys processes and 128gb onboard. The screen on these is amazing, the camera great and it's zippy fast...but maybe that's just cuz I came from an old Note 2.

Battery life has been fine so far. I usually unplug at 630am and have about 30% left by 10 or 11pm

The processor has been fine. I don't do much gaming or anything but I think people make a bigger deal out of it than needed. My 6P I had before this had the 820 and it was fine for what I needed, the 821 is good too.

I will say it again though, the more I use the camera, the more I love it. The wide angle lens is just awesome.
