Default Starcraft II Issues

Anyone else have their system simply shut down when playing Starcraft II? I'm assuming it has to do with an overheating problem as I have read many more instances of this happening. I installed the game, played for about an hour and boom, the system simply shut down right in the middle of it. I've never had my system do this before playing any other game. I can play Left 4 Dead for hours and it's not an issue at all.

I don't have the highest end video card (ATI Radeon - don't remember the exact card - I'm at work currently (4670 maybe?)), a quad core processor and 8 GB of RAM.

Little frustrating to shell out $60 for a game and have this happen. Not sure what to do here. Thoughts? Inexpensive suggestions?

Perhaps try installing a temperature monitor and removing any dust build up on your fans. Also, is anything being overclocked?

I installed an app to check core temps right after it happened and my cores were up around 57 - 58. They were definitely hot. I might have to open things up and see if there is some dust build up, but like I said, Left 4 Dead doesn't cause any issues and it is pretty graphic intensive as well.

Don't know how to overclock anything, so odds are, nope.

Is 57-58 really that hot?

Normally they run between 40 - 44 or so, so yeah, for my system I guess.

Other than that, what else causes the system to shut down like that other than SC itself? I had trouble getting it started right away again as well. Sounds like heat to me, but I'm not positive.

Sounds like it's overheating to me. Could be your power supply or heatsink not doing its job. I had to dust out my heatsink as my cpu was hitting 115 degrees!

It does seem like heat to me as well. First would try the dust, but in reality if nothing else causes the overheating (as in similar type games) then something is probably wonky in the code for some processors.

Google says :

http://www.overclock.net/graphics-ca...ing-issue.html

This site also seems to have a fix, by setting your frame rate

you shouldn't have to worry about your CPU overheating unless it starts hitting 60+ degrees celsius (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...perature/143/5). GPU's are generally tougher, with any modern video card you should only worry if the temp spikes above 90C, a card idling at 50-60C is quite normal

also the FIRST thing you should do is disable Windows from auto-rebooting when it encounters a critical error. if you right-click on My Computer, hit properties, then look for Advanced System Settings, you'll see an area called Startup and Recovery. go in there and under System Failure uncheck the Automatically Restart option. now instead of rebooting your system will give the classic Blue Screen of Death. you won't have any choice but to still reboot the system, but at least now it will give you an error code and you can pinpoint exactly what's causing the problem. if you write down what that error tells you and post it here, it shouldn't be too hard to trace the problem

I don't think it was a BSOD error. I do believe it was the over-heating problem which caused the system to shut down. It didn't reboot automatically.

I've seen BSOD's (yes, even in Windows 7). This was not a BSOD.

Very misleading thread title... it's not a SC2 problem, it's your comps problem... boo

I am on the fence about sc2, still deciding if I am going to splurge to upgrade my motherboard, cpu and ram before getting this game (have min system reqs currently...)

Speaking of that- it says on the sys reqs that you need up-to-date windows... what if you have a less than legit copy of windows 7? Will the game work, or do I need to get a real windows 7 (or downgrade to xp) for this to work properly?

Apparently, the game's menu screens aren't framerate-limited. This means that when there's nothing else going on, your graphics hardware renders the bejeezus out of those screens, causing nasty overheating problems. The fix is easy, requiring players to add the following lines to your "Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt" file:

frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60

Excuse me?

Blizzard Confirms StarCraft II Overheating Bug

http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archi...ating-bug.aspx

How is that MY comps problem?

But then again, you have a "less than legit copy of Windows"...

Please read the thread before posting.

LOL simmer down. My bad, seems like it is a sc2 problem. Apologies.

Looks like you didn't have any hardware damage and the fix is already out there. No harm done, except that your comp crashed once or twice.

As for my less than legit copy of windows, it's not that I won't pay- it's just that I haven't. Weird that I need a legit copy to play a game, I wonder why...

ECH! How can "We'll release it when it's ready" Blizzard not have caught this in testing? Looks like some people are having some permanently fried hardware.
