First person shooter games
The bit got a PS4 for Christmas.
He is interested in a FPS game.
I am not a gamer.
Any recommendations for an 11 yr old boy.

Lots Of Blood:
DOOM (SP)
Wolfenstein: The New Order (SP - cheap!)
Dying Light (SP/MP - cheap!)
Blood-ish:
Battlefield 1 (SP/MP)
Far Cry 4/Primal (SP/Co-op)
Rainbow Six: Siege (MP only)
Not Really Bloody At All:
Titanfall 2 (SP/MP)
Overwatch (MP Only)
Are games I would recommend.

For 11yo the single player Battlefield 1 would be way too graphic IMO.
Far Cry games have sex and nudity (in addition to the slaughter of ppl and animals) if that's a concern.
Dying Light is also pretty creepy/scary if that kind of thing is a concern.
EDIT: What about Destiny?

Remember that this generation of consoles you have to pay to play online. PS3s did not require payment.
Might want to keep that in mind and only buy a single player game.

what about star wars battlefront or the plants vs zombie series?
also, I couldn't post without recommending a lego game or two, depending upon his interests. good co-op games for sharing with dad as well, but they aren't FPS.

Destiny wouldn't be a bad call.
It is lots of shooting but all at goofy aliens. And no blood/gore/swearing or anything else.
Star Wars Battlefront and Plants VS. Zombie Garden Warfare are good recommendations too for that age.

That game is outright terrifying. Been a while since a game made me as nervous as that one. Going out after sunset without backup was a firm "no".

Destiny would fit the bill, but to play the "end game" content, he would have to group up with 5 other players online, so it can be tough to find groups that are children friendly.

I'm the biggest Star Wars nerd out there and I can't give a thumbs up to Battlefront, at least the latest one, overly expensive for too little content and not any real single player campaigns.
I played it for 2 hours and then traded it in.

Original Doom is fairly tame compared to 2016 Doom.
I think your best option is probably Overwatch.

Doom 2016 is very straightforward.
Anyway, i made a list from bloodiest to least bloody. You guys are weird. I would assume the OP knows what he allows for his child as well as what his child can handle. FPS games arent really known for being non violent here (well, other than Super Noah's Ark 3D).
