Default Flames D-men at top or near top of all main stats

I know the Flames have played 9 games which is more than other teams but this is still impressive.

Wideman is 1st amongst NHL d-men with 4 goals. Brodie is tied for 2nd with 3 goals.

Giordano is 2nd in assists with 6. Russell is tied for 3rd with 5. Brodie is tied for 9th with 4.

Brodie and Giordano are tied for 2nd in points with 7. Wideman and Russell are tied for 12th with 5.

Russell is tied for 2nd in +/- with a +6. Brodie is tied for 6th with a +5. Giordano and Wideman are tied for 41st with a +2.

Considering there are over 200 defensemen in the league (30 teams X 6 regulars plus all the #7's) that gives lots of hope for this year. I know it's a small sample size but here's hoping they can keep contributing like this throughout the season.

It looks like tonight's apparent Glencross goal is being credited to Wideman.

We are Calgary Flames. Our defense better than your offense. Prepare to be defended!

I'm having fun as a flames fan. But I'm also a flames fan so naturally I'm just a little bit pessmistic. Let's see in a few more games.

I just want Wideman to play like this all season. He was pretty good when he first got here and then lost it last year with injuries. As long as you don't have him out there against the other team's top offensive players he's passable in his own zone and scores plenty of points.

If Wideman plays solidly we have a good to great top 4. All Smid and Engelland need to do is lock down their zone.

Don't forget blocked shots!

Russell 2nd in the NHL with 27
Giordano tied for 4th with 20
Brodie 6th with 19
Wideman 30th with 13

and even after all that, it was Deryk Engllend who lead the team in ice time last night.

(and it was nice to see that Brodie and Giordano got a rest and only had to play ~20 minutes)

I've been pretty impressed by Engllend so far. After reading comments about him when he signed, I thought he would play 2 minutes a game and couldn't even make a break out pass. He's been pretty steady so far. Nothing flashy, but a good 5 or 6 dman that sticks up for his teammates.

I'm liking the Englland signing

Wideman was dominating early last season, he wasnt the same after injury though. Glad to see him playing close to that level again

Its been a fun start to the season, couldnt have asked for more

You might be joking, but I really believe we actually have just as many core pieces in core positions to be a contender then a lot of other "top young teams" out there (Buffalo, Colorado, Florida, NYI - although they are really good) - I still think you win championships from the blueline out, and I think the Flames have to be right near the top. I think with one more young top pairing D, and a game breaking winner.... this team really does have the core talent to do it.

Yeah, the offensive contributions from the top 4 scoring defenceman are ruining the team's chances at McDavid as much as the goaltending.

During the last rebuild the Flames would get 9 goals all year from the defence core, and we thought Toni Lydman was an offensive defenceman because he could get 20 points a season.

Really the defence scoring so far, is probably more unsustainable than the teams save percentage. But the top 4 guys are making pretty strong offensive contributions thus far. I suspect things will correct themselves a fair bit as the season goes on.
