I saw this on Grantland, and it was too funny not to share....

What's the Shanahan part of the joke? That's the only connection I don't see.

Lindros would have never gotten a single concussion and would have won the Art Ross trophy every year. The Stanley Cup would still have been elusive...because...Toronto is just no good.

Hypothetical Stanley Cups are the best kind.

In my alternate reality we trade Gilmour to Philly for Forsberg instead of Toronto.

That's probably just as likely as that guys pipe dream.

Fun read.

It would be interesting to see what would have happened if the Nordiques traded Lindros to New York instead of Philly.

That trade was:

Doug Weight, Tony Amonte, Alexei Kovalev, John Vanbiesbrouck and three first rounders.

As opposed to:

Peter Forsberg, Steve Duchesne, Chris Simon, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall and two first rounders.

Of course the inevitable Calgary jab. Yes Toronto, you hands down won every trade with us. Happy?

Not true, we fleeced them in the Colborne trade

Yes it sucks... But only terrible teams fans constantly bring things like this up. Every team has terrible moves in their history. I doubt there's an article on the 25 year anniversary on the Flames picking Kidd over brodeur.

Have to wonder if Kidd would have flourished in New Jersey and the Flames would have ruined Brodeur.

Don't strain yourself too much; it's a humour piece.

I think it was kind of awesome to go back and see how all these trades were connected in a round-about way to that Tom Kurvers deal. Without that one trade, so many others would not have happened or would have looked very different.

People understand it's a tongue-in-cheek humour piece, right?

Exactly. I'm sure someone could write an article in detail about the Jets bad trades (I.e. Selanne, Babych, Draper, Barnes, etc). However, the Jets have always sucked.

Always been a fan, but admitting it is the first step to recovery. ..

You'd like to think so, but some people need colored text to alert them to the use of sarcasm, so not necessarily.
