Gallagher: NHL expansion to Las Vegas is a 'done deal'
Nevada Silver ... Somethings ... Silverblades? Silver wolves? Nevada Silvers? Silver State Aces?
Or what about the Area 51 connection? Nevada Fighters? Nevada Blackbirds? Nevada Aliens? (Gross).

I like:
Atoms
Rush
Jokers
The arena will *have* to be called "The House" though.

It is too bad that Sharks is taken because that would have been perfect.
Aces seems the natural choice.
Jacks would sound OK to IMO.

Not that crazy about having an NHL team in Nevada. They could probably afford it with all the casinos buying up tickets and boxes but the average person in LV probably can't.
In 2010, The median income for a household in the city was $53,000 and the median income for a family was $58,465. Males had a median income of $35,511 versus $27,554 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,060.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas
Plus their total population is only about 600,000
Their permanent fan base will probably be next to non-existent. More than likely if the Flames play there you'll probably see more Flames jerseys in the stands that LV jerseys.
Moneywise it might make sense, but that's the only reason I can see.

When it comes to American cities, you simply can not use the actual population within city limits to determine how many people live in an area. The Las Vegas metropolitan area is home to almost two million people, along with countless visitors each year.
There are many reasons why an NHL franchise may not work in Las Vegas, but your use of Las Vegas city population is not one of them.

... and further, when you use that method to rank American cities based on population, you get some of the following absurd results:
Boston, population 645,000 (how's hockey working there?)
Dallas, population 1.25 million (about the same size as Calgary)
Columbus, population 822,000 (bigger than Boston and Miami!)
St. Louis and Pittsburgh, both populations slightly over 300,000

How big is this LV metropolitan area?
The further away from the arena, the less likely people would be willing to travel on a regular basis, as a STH, to see games.... especially since LV and its surrounding areas are not traditional hockey markets
But, assuming you are correct, I think the biggest deterent to a healthy fan base is the median income. Season tickets are expensive.

I couldn't find numbers in a quick Wiki search, but it basically includes Las Vegas, Paradise, and Henderson. It's one large contiguous area.

So how reliable is this rumour? I don't doubt we'll see another expansion soon but I'll believe Vegas when I see it.
If there is a team there, I really hope they stay away from the gambling theme names. Seems way to hokey.

Bob McKenzie also said he sees a team in Las Vegas in the next five years. Usually he doesn't just throw statements out there.

Las Vegas would probably be the quietest arena in the NHL when the home team scores.

The Las Vegas Metro area, population around 2 million, is pretty much Clark County, which has an area of more than 20,000 square km, though the vast majority of the population is centred in the Las Vegas Valley, total area, 4,100 square km.
Calgary has a total area of 762 square km.
HOWEVER.
I believe that the combination of a) casinos buying boxes and b) the population of Las Vegas having a pro-sports team to call their own has the potential to be both butts-in-seats popular and lucrative.
The ultimate caveat will be on-ice success. If they Florida Panthers it, they'll be in Quebec City in ten years. If they become the new San Jose Sharks or Anaheim Ducks, they'll be in Vegas, and successful, for 30+ years.

Instead of a goal horn they would play a loud recording of a slot machine paying out.
