Yeah, I agree if Calgary ever wants the Winter Olympics again having the Saddledome around would be very useful. Just put a big plastic bag around it to keep out the dust.

I hope when they officially release some information it will be everything, including location, design, capacity and funding arrangements.

By the time the new arena is open, they'll know whether or not they're going to bid on the 2026 games. If a bid is planned, the Saddledome would most likely be used as the Figure Skating/Short Track venue, and would be saved from the wrecking ball at least temporarily.

There will very likely be a practice facility like they have in Columbus and are building as part of the arena in Edmonton. Like those facilities, it will likely be made available for public use when it's not being used by the teams.

- He stated there is no opposition to what is going to happen to the old arena as it will be 40+ yrs old come completion. We took this to mean it will be demolished which makes the most sense.
|
The Dome was completed in 83 which means it's 31 years old now, so that could mean the new arena won't be completed for another 10 years.

Flames to announce arena plans in the... future...
It's going to be a very sad day when the Dome gets demolished. I hope it doesn't happen. If they do demolish it, I wanna be able to have my seats as a souvenir.

I'm sure they will. I know a guy whose family owned season tickets to the Canadiens for over 10 years. When they closed the Forum they were given the option of keeping their seats. I sat in them once. Could feel the hockey history seeping through my ass.

- The project is going to be a billion dollar project.

I don't know what the situation is with your CFL team, because I don't follow it, but when he says a billion dollar project, I take it to mean it'll be not just an arena (though that'll probably be 60% of that budget), but rather the development of the surrounding area into a more entertainment district. So I imagine not only you'll have the arena, but maybe casino slots attached, restaurants, bars, shuttles, etc. Basically what the Leafs did with the area around the ACC. In today's era you don't want to build like the Sens in the middle of nowhere and hope that fans come. There has to be that infrastructure around the arena so before and after the games people have things to see and do. At the end of the day I'd imagine the first phase may be a billion dollars, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's more to be announced a few years in, to include much more because a billion probably isn't much if you decide to build condo's and office towers and things like that.

Did KK hold his little finger to the side of his mouth when he mentioned the price?

Plus we'd be rightfully mocked... if we can call rename Rexall Place to Rectal Place, others will gladly note our new arena is in Ballsack, AB.

Wouldn't be too crushed if the Saddledome gets torn down, as long as something else interesting goes up.

I heard from someone who is supposed to have insider knowledge that the spot is the west end of downtown. It's should be along 9th ave where there are the dealerships and those huge parking lots.
I guess we will find out in two months either way....

It means it will be an arena and new football stadium with office facilities to house and localize all the Flames sports enterprises (Flames, Stamps, Hitmen, Roughnecks). You are probably looking at close to a billion right there depending on how elaborate the football stadium will be.

Investors Group Field in Winnipeg cost $210 million. The new stadium in Regina has a budget of $278 million.
Rogers Place in Edmonton has a budget of $480 million for the arena itself, and a total budget just over $600 million for the entire Arena District project.
Building both an arena and stadium in the same area at the same time should be somewhat cheaper than building two projects separately. Also, before any construction can begin in the area (whether an arena project or anything else), there needs to be a significant environmental cleanup of the area and likely infrastructure work on Bow Trail and 14th Street. Those projects could be budgeted separately from the arena and stadium themselves.
