Does salary retained count against the cap?

Lack is as proven as any of our goaltenders. You've got to be kidding.
So weird to see Vancouver basically throwing in the towel. Could be the smartest thing for them, though. Depends on what they get back for Kesler.
Pathetic that they couldn't hold onto Luongo or Schneider.

This trade is pretty much Luongo for Dubnyk and Colborne. Vancouver got owned. hehe
Looking forward to playing the Canucks over the next 5 seasons.

|
Really? Lack has 25 games and a .924 save percentage.
Calgary: I'll give you that one over Ramo due to age.
Edmonton: Fasth and Scrivens have proven just as much as Lack. (Fasth: 30 games .915, Scrivens: 58 games .921)
Philly: Mason has been fine this year and has just as much upside as Lack (4 months younger)
NYI: Yes
Buffalo: Jonas Enroth- at worst equal to lack. Same age but has played 76 games with a .912 save percentage.
Carolina: Cam Ward is still better then Lack. And Khudobin has played 43 NHL games with a .930 save percentage. Once again at least equal to Lack.
Washington: Same as other teams. Neuvirth is same age as Lack but has 134 NHL games and a .910 save percentage. Holtby is younger and has 96 NHL starts with a .918 save percentage. Grubauer has played only 18 NHL games but has a .925 save percentage. So at worst Grubauer is identical to Lack.
Winnipeg: Yes
Colorado: On what planet is Lack better then Varlamov, when Varlamov is younger and has 195 games of NHL experience with a .915 save percentage.
So Calgary, Winnipeg, and NYI. That's it. All the other teams have goalies the same age, or younger than Lack that have been just as good in the NHL but have more experience.

In many ways Vancouver is having this rebuild forced onto them in ways that didn't become as acute for the Flames. I can't help but feel that if we had a disappointing season like the Canucks and our star got injured that we would have instead hunkered down and hoped for next season instead of just throwing the towel in on the core that was clearly not going to do anything further.
|
The Flames remained a playoff team for four years after making the final and were in the hunt down to the wire for another three. The Canucks are tearing things down two years after making the final but the Flames really never crashed and burned this fast. They just gradually eroded staying good enough to make or just miss the playoffs. Gillis with his sloppy handling of the goaltender situation and inability to find a top forward to supplement what he inherited really sent the franchise into a spiral.

So at 15%, the canucks are paying around 800k and likewise as a cap hit until he retires. Depending on when he retires they will get hit again with the recapture penalty

Quite a day with Luongo on move to FLA. Convinced this more related to fallout from non-start in Heritage than reason for the non-start.

Seems silly to me... also, Bob said specifically he didn't believe there was any trade in the works for Luongo as of Sunday, so he may be trying to save face for calling that one wrong. Anyway, doesn't really matter what the motivations are.

This would be $795k against the cap. Pretty insignificant with the cap going up even just for next year, and less so going forward.
Whether the deal is good or bad really depends on your context. Schneider and Luongo for Horvat, Markstrom and Matthias is terrible as of the beginning of last season. Not keeping Schneider was an absurd mistake (depending who Horvat becomes of course).
But as of today? Surprisingly good looking trade made by Gillis. I'm surprised he got anything of value at all, much less a good (if no longer blue chip) prospect and an NHL quality player.

I'm not saying we should have rebuilt two years after we made it to the finals. I'm saying that after basically 9 seasons of steady digression with the previous three being out of the playoffs we started three years too late. In the Canucks' first season out of the playoffs they've started the rebuild. If they were the Flames they'd still try to ride out that core for another two seasons. We have now three lost years. Canucks will have one.

thats only if he retires that one season, everyone before it basically halves

How does recapture work because I assume Lou will be long gone by the time the contract expires.

Vancouver got rid of 2 franchise level goalies for seemingly very little. Gillis really screwed things up there.
I love it!
