Alberta Residential Energy Savings Program
So this is new...
https://www.efficiencyalberta.ca/residential-no-charge/
Quote:
The Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program offers direct, no-charge installation of energy efficient products in Albertans’ houses, apartments and condos. Whether you own or rent your home, an Energy Efficiency Alberta installer will visit your home and conduct a walkthrough to identify potential opportunities for energy-efficient upgrades at no charge. Most homes can be upgraded in about an hour.
|
Quote:
All Alberta households are eligible to participate regardless of income or housing type. Installation will be conducted by qualified installers#who schedule home visits. Installers will remove old products and replace them with more energy-efficient products, such as:
Replacing existing incandescent nightlights, lightbulbs and exit signs with LED products
Replacing inefficient shower heads with high-efficiency shower heads
Installing faucet aerators if no aerator is present
Replacing a traditional power bar with an advanced power bar
Replacing a non-programmable thermostat with a smart (self-adjusting) thermostat
|
All for free. Something seems fishy here...There has be a catch? A limit? Qualifications?

The monies from this is coming from the carbon tax collected from taxpayers. They take your money and then give it back in the form of rebates. No freebee's here.

My face is a bum!

They are paying people to come and change lightbulbs.
I can't freaking believe it.
I tried to give them a fair shake, but sadly this just ends in a bad "How many NDP members does it take to change a lightbulb?" joke.

Just do the same thing that pretty much everyone with a smart thermostat will be doing. Sell the government one online after you get it.

High efficiency shower head? More like ridiculous low flow feels like someone is spitting on me shower head.
If someone tried to install a high efficiency shower head in my bathroom I would punch them right in the junk.

Ahhh the irony of some of this garbage and how little it will do to actually reduce energy consumption in large scales.
Aren't energy efficient light bulbs already available for the majority of the public? How much mercury has been improperly been exposed for people who don't actually recycling these things in the proper way?
How much GHG emissions will be reduced from water efficient aerators in a bathroom? LOL.
While the province will spend hundreds of millions paying for the installation of LED bulbs and for someone to screw an aerator onto your kitchen tap, there isn't any money that has been allocated for the new LRT line. At least this project could reduce automobile use, improve transit to a massive population base, provide quality construction jobs and more.
What about looking at the possibility of a Calgary to Edmonton high speed train? If we are actually going to be having a carbon tax, let's at least use the proceeds in a matter that best attempts to achieve its goals and nevermind the BS.

Being newer, there isn't anything they could do on the list that would make our house more energy efficient. How earth saving is that, I can sign up and get someone to drive to my house to install a power bar on my xbox.

I'm amazed they are giving out power bars. And just curious, how do you make one of those more efficient? Does it deliver less energy? Not have an "on" light? I'm confused on that one.

Sounds like huge solllars to save tiny amounts of energy. And when you consider all the driving around, this is probably net negative in the environment.
How about rebates on things that actually make a difference?

Finally getting some free stuff!
After hearing Cons trot out the "free stuff" canard for years I was beginning to believe it was never going to happen.

was kind of excited about this when I heard about it.
free stuff. sign me up!
then it's just for things I already have and easily did myself.
now if they will pay for an electrician to come in and get rid of the fluorescent lighting I have and replace it with something else, then we're talking.

The best part is apparently they are using a Ontario company to do this for us. So this is the NDP's idea of saving us money and creating jobs? Taxing us us immensely and hiring an outside the province company at the tune of a few 100 millions of dollars. And we get a few lightbulbs swapped out and an aerator put in our faucets. Hey Rachel, we already have the highest unemployment in the country and guys like me have been sitting around for months because there's no work on the construction industry and you're busy handing work out to another province. Great.

I don't get a carbox tax rebate, and I allready did most of the items on their list including LED lightbulbs and smart thermostat.
Which is awesome because I can tell you my energy bill after the upgrades has been minimally impacted. Having 2 young kids means lots of washer/dryer and dishwasher use. Oh and lots of furnace and AC use as well.
So people are right when they say this is window dressing. Installing 10 bulbs in a house is going to do jack all for most peoples power bill or consumption.

The Smart Strip has 10 clearly marked outlets that you plug your computer or home entertainment center peripherals into. When you power down your computer or stereo, the Smart Strip automatically shuts down the power to your computer's and entertainment's center peripherals.

Hrmm, actually I could use a couple of those. I suppose the only way to get them free is to have an audit done though, eh? I still have a few bulbs I could take an upgrade for as well.
