I have a 75 minute connection in Montreal this summer, en route to Rome. Of course, Air Canada wouldn't let you book that itinerary if it wasn't possible. Will I be bathing in the Trevi Fountain to clean myself and my clothes because my luggage never made it?

Not super concerned, but it is in the back of my mind.

I had a connecting flight through Montreal four years ago, and had booked a ~three-hour-long layover. My departing flight was about two-and-a-half hours late, so I had to make the connection in Montreal in about 20 minutes. I made it; my bag didn't.

I was quite surprised to see almost all of the Big Ass Fans in the new terminal were inoperative, with blades removed. Wonder it if had more to do with something unrelated to equipment failure.

I used itravel2000 years ago for a trip to Thailand because I was able to pay for the ticket with Petro-Points. Return trip from Bangkok went through Hong Kong, which was only an hour connection. It might have been fine if my luggage was checked all the way through, but it wasn't. Grabbed my suitcase, got in line to get it checked back in, but didn't even make it half way to the counter before my flight to Vancouver left. Had to wait in the airport for several hours before the itravel offices opened, argued with a rep on the phone for an hour before they finally agreed to book me a discounted $300 ticket back home, but then had to wait at the Air Canada desk for an hour when checking in because there was still some ####up with the booking and almost missed the 2nd flight. I swore off travel agencies after that, anything I book now I do with the airlines directly

I did get to wander around Hong Kong for a day though which was nice

You could go carry on only. It isn’t that difficult.

Yes. It’s not that hard, you just have to plan a wardrobe a nd plan to wash clothes. I spent 6 weeks in Europe this spring with just carry on. The first two weeks in cool and rainy Amsterdam/Brussels/Brittany, 3 weeks in warm Portugal, and a final week in Paris. Weeks in Rome where you know it’s going to be warm/hot would make packing easier. Wool and quick dry fabrics are your friend.

3 weeks, part of a 10-person family group including 3 children, with half of that time being spent outside of major cities. Going all carry-on is a nice idea, but not practical in this case.

My last trip, on the other hand: 4 dudes, two weeks in Scotland and Ireland - no problem. Carry-on roller and a backpack was plenty.

Different trips, different needs.

My question would have been no chance to book the WestJet non-stop YYC-FCO instead of connecting flights?

75 minutes isn't a ton of time to absorb delays or anything like that.

But it's plenty of time to get to your A/C. You will already have cleared security in Calgary and you won't clear customs until you get to Rome.

Those overseas flight will have connecting baggage from all over the place, it's pretty standard, so it's not like they'll be flabbergasted that there are connecting bags from YYC.

But yeah, anything can happen to can throw things off the rails.

Case in point: my 9:00 am flight from Dulles back to YYC this morning still hasn't departed as of 3:00 pm EDT. Not enough flight attendants to crew the plane. I'm sitting in a chair at the gate, eavesdropping on a bunch of super-pissed people trying to book tickets on something else.

Poor timun, we hardly knew ye. Flightaware was showing you were expected to depart in like 30 minutes, now bumped up over an hour and half again.

Oh I'm well aware. Originally the ETD got pushed to noon, I went and walked around the terminal to stretch my legs a bit and by the time I got back to the gate ETD was pushed to 1:40. It has since been pushed to 2:40, 3:45 and now 5:00.

The flight crew will "time out" if we're not off the gate by 5:38, per the cap'n, so at this point I think it's a foregone conclusion my flight will be cancelled.

In a way I don't feel so bad insofar as we're not the only ones. I chatted with a fella trying to go to Charleston; they were supposed to leave at 8:15 and are also now scheduled to depart at 5:00. They'll likely get cancelled too.

It was simply the cost. For that time of year, within the window we had to work with, and when we booked in April, WestJet was about $400 per person more. Spread out the across the entire group, that's a pretty hefty chunk.

We might end up paying for it in hassle and time, but $4000 is a pretty high threshold.

I also understand United had a bit of an operational meltdown due to storms and such in the NE USA yesterday too. Probably the hangover from all that.

I won't go carry-on only again until airlines start enforcing their carry-on rules. Unless I'm travelling business class. Did that last summer to Portugal and that was the most stressful part of the trip. Trying to get on before overhead bin space was full, people shoving in line to be first, people getting verbally aggressive with flight attendants because they were not gate checking their precious bag....

Also don't know if I'd trust WestJet on a trip to Europe (or Asia).
