My favorite album in a very long time came out a year ago today! Still listen to it regularly.

I was listening to the recent Kestrels album last night and because they are on the Sonic Unyon record label, it made me pull out my old Tristan Psionic CDs. Man, they were a great band.

Soundgarden for the foreseeable future. I am gutted.....haven't felt this way about an artist passing since Layne Staley died.

Besides being my favorite song of all-time, I would say this is also the best song of all-time. The energy level is almost unparalleled. Cocaine is a hell of a drug, and thanks to it we have this. So thanks cocaine.

Maybe because I'm getting older and I'm doing that whole nostalgia thing that us old people go through, but I'm kind of going back through my musical selections from the 80's and adding them to my play lists

So just some samples.

Sass Jordan, I've always loved her voice with a certain, bluey smokey sound to it and a lot of power. She also sounded the same whether in concert or live. Also possessed one of the greatest smiles that I've ever seen. Trivia, after Sammy Hagar left Van Halen they considered having her as the bands lead singer. (BTW I picked this video because beyond the fact that it rocks, Jeff Healey is playing in it and has an awesome solo)

Toronto. Holly Woods had this really unique voice, and I can honestly say that she was one of my first rock and roll crushes. This band was tremendously talented and had a lot in common with Heart. They had a string of really good songs in "Start telling the truth", "When can I see you again" and "your daddy don't know". Unfortunately they were forced apart when their label went bankrupt. Trivia They recorded the song "What about Love" but the band nearly fractured when it wasn't put onto an album. Heart later picked it up and it became one of their better known hits in their 80's comeback.

Triumph, one of my favorite Canadian power bands, and one that I don't think gets enough credit for how good they were both live and in the studio. Rik Emmett needs to get more mention when it comes to great guitar players and talents. I remember seeing them play a few times and my jaw always dropped, especially when they played Rock and Roll Machine and you got like a 10 minute guitar solo. Trivia Rik Emmett between touring is a associate professor at Humber College in Toronto.

BTW I just found this clip and wanted to post it

That's all for now, because I don't want to bore you all with this grandpa talk.

Another instant classic from Alestorm. Huge paradox here: this is completely NSFW, but it begs to be played at top volume!

Spent the last couple months going deep with Pretty Lights. PL single-handedly turned my ear to modern electronic 5 years ago. I found the genre to be exceedingly difficult to break into, but I found creativity, groove and musicianship that I could latch onto in his music and it became my spring board into what I consider to be the most interesting genre of music being made today.

Spoiler!

Griz is another good choice for someone who can bridge the gap between traditional music and modern electronic music

Got stuck in the youtube vortex where you look for a video at 8:00pm and next thing you know you are watching something totally different at 12:30am.

Continuing my Journey through older stuff. In the 80's I absolutely listened to the harder stuff. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy. But I had a dark secret that I hid from my friends, because they'd never ever understand.

One of what I thought was the most talented and amazing bands that never ever had the success that they should have had and had a short life span. But they had a unique sound at the time that was tough to ignore with a mixture of pop/punk/country and blue grass revivial. I loved this band, and never got to see them live, though I did get to see Maria Mckee years later and she was amazing live.

But every once in a while, when I'm driving home from a bad day, or a long day, or if its Calgary Stampeded time, I'll fire this band up.

I'll even pull out my guitar once in a while and play the openers for "I found Love", or "Shelter" or "ways to be wicked".

I love Shelter because the background music is really strong and really helps McKee's voice which I would class a soft smokey

Sweet, Sweet Baby is just a fun song and its simple.

I found love, another fun fusion song that works really well in a bar setting. Or on a long drive with a cigarette hanging out the window.

Ways to be wicked which would be classed as their signature song.

Just as a bonus, this is a interview with Maria McKee where she talks about the break up of Lone Justice.

Listening to The Hardship Post's classic album "Somebody Spoke" tonight. Another great band everybody seems to have forgotten.

Haha. I find this hilarious. Sounds so "white".

Good song and video though.
