If Backlund isn't a finalist this year he never will be. Had a fantastic season, was the team's MVP imo. What else can you do?

Arguably a bit, in part because he wins so many of those draws. But faceoffs aren't enough to move the needle anywhere near that much. The guy is insane.

Do it again because the Selke is a reputation award. Maybe a playoff run so someone other than Flames fans can see how good he is.

Shots against per 60:
Koivu: 28.18
Kesler: 27.68
Backlund: 26.10
Bergeron: 23.18
Two things to take away from this.
First, yes, there's a good basis for suggesting that Backlund deserved a nomination.
Second... Bergeron is a God. He should win every year forever. They should just re-name the trophy after him.

Thanks for posting this. Based on these stats, what other players stand out across the league?

Backlund can't really have been robbed when his much lauded career season is not as good as our #1C's disappointing campaign.
Would've liked to see him get it. Selke is a hard one to unseat an incumbent though.

Backlund is miles better defensively than Monahan is.

Personally I've never cared that much about these kinds of personal awards. Most of them are pretty arbitrary anyway. Sure, Backlund would also have been worthy of a top 3 spot, but as long as they don't pick someone who is clearly less deserving I don't care.
I also get why Koivu is there and Backlund is not. Koivu is the #1 center of a team that was better in the regular season, with more points. That will easily get you more votes.

Backlund is 27. When he was 21, he was putting the finishing touches on a less impressive rookie year than Monahan's 18 year old one.
Monahan at 27 could well be a perennial Selke favorite.

He could also be a Kovalchuk that takes draws. We don't have magically "see into the future specs" all we know is what is right now and right now Backlund is miles better defensively than Monahan.
It would have been nice (and deserved) for Backlund to get nommed this year since I think the Selke is one of those awards where you can't really win the award without having been previously nominated for it.
Bergeron should win it this year.

Lebrun had him in his top 5, so I would be extremely surprised if he wasn't in the top ten.

Who votes on this award, the media? If that's the case I would suspect Backlund to get at least one first place vote from a Calgary media member.

Selke voting is all over the place. ~50 players are going to get votes. Backlund will get a few votes and finish top 20 IMO.
No Flame will get serious consideration for any individual award until the team wins something.

Selke is largely a reputation award. Backlund will have to string some seasons like this one together to be a finalist. Also, it would help if he scored more points.

Never expected that Backlund would finish top 3, but I am happy he received enough recognition to finish as one of the finalists. That is how you win these recognition awards anyways.
It works both ways. For instance, I thought Lidstrom was completely robbed for not winning the Norris, but IIRC, once he started winning he won once or twice primarily based on reputation (at least that is how I remember it, but it is Lidstrom, and who the F is going to argue with him winning one really?).
Awards are nice, and you always hope that the players getting them really deserve the accolades they are being given. It doesn't always work out that way, and I have long stopped being bent out of shape when someone else who probably deserved it less won. That is just the nature of how opinion driven awards go.
