I agree, I like keeping that 5 man unit together.

What I really want is them to start that line on the PP. Max possession and wear down the opposing PKers. Switch off to the "#1" PP line after we've had some good zone time and build on it. I hate watching the first PP unit struggle to enter and lose possession and when they finally get off the 3M line gets 20 seconds of PP time and just as the cycle get working it's over.

Sadly, 1 goal doesn't get you to the first team PP

Kris Versteeg on the point on the power play is a thing that I can't believe is still a thing.

Flames biggest need is a rhs winger with a shot.

Unit two is your more typical power play.

If anything, they should maybe just give Unit 2 some more power play time relative to Unit 1. They can keep things simple and that's usually how power plays get back on track.

Well then put Brodie and Stone on the second unit and that solves that problem.

IMO pp units should be

Gio - Hamilton

Ferland - Monahan - Gaudreau

Keeps the first line together and doesn't mess up the lines after a pp.

Second unit should be

Stone - Brodie

Versteeg - Backlund - Tkachuk

I don't like Frolik on the pp and think if you're going to have a guy like Versteeg who is pretty useless 5 on 5 then might as well take advantage of his skills on the pp.

Hopefully the Dome treats the game like a playoff game. It was pretty quiet in there Monday and didn't sound too loud Wednesday (could be sportsnet' fault)
It was very loud Wednesday in the 1st. 2 and 3 were quieter but for the Doughty booing.

Hamilton I believe is tied for 7th in defenseman scoring. Is there a team in the NHL with a top 20 or 30 scoring defenseman that doesn't sport him on the first unit? Utterly bizarre special teams management.

Have you seen Hamilton skate? He's a damn fine skater and has a better first pass than Brodie. There's simply no logical reason to have Brodie or Versteeg out on the point of the first unit. The results speak for themselves as outside of a hot stretch in the middle of the season the first unit has been one of the worst first unit powerplays a Flames team has ever iced. It's criminal that a player as talented as Gaudreau only has 15 points on the powerplay this season but that happens when teams can ignore the point men and focus on the forwards underneath.

If you're going to move Tkachuk to the right side, I'd replace Versteeg with Bennett.

You can't have 2 players who can not shoot in Brodie and Gaudreau on the same PP unit.

The other team effectively plays the other 3 guys man on man, and has 1 guy cover those 2 since there's no threat of a shot

Very important key to the game, and I can't stress this enough.
