How are people speculating on his desire and drive to play hockey? Where is that coming from?

That's the problem with the news like this. Poirier was a first-round draft pick with a lot of expectations set. People interested in the subject absolutely will speculate when the announcement could mean a whole bunch of very different things, both trivial and serious. Is the leave caused by a family issue? Breakup with a girlfriend? Illness? Substance abuse? Personal confidence? I understand the concern for personal privacy of a player; maybe they just couldn't say anything more definitive to clarify and quash the rumours. But I am not at all surprised by speculations and assumptions. It's natural to have them.

If he was injured i think they probably wouldve released it. Could be wrong.

Except a shoulder injury isn't a personal issue. If it were an injury, the team would disclose that. They always do. Not so with "personal issues."

Whatever it is that's keeping him away from the team, I hope he's able to work through it and come back stronger.

Yes, and it's compounded by the fact that, quite often, there is an explanation where the problem is something like family illness or death, new baby, etc. A lack of disclosure makes some people assume it's something the player would be embarrassed about.

For anyone wondering or new to the boards as to why some posters may be inclined to quickly question the motivation to play...... refer to Ryan Howse.
As for Poirier, he was my favorite prospect out of that draft for the Flames besides Monahan. I thought he would for sure play in the NHL......the skill and the speed were incredible....it's really unfortunate to see that it hasn't panned out so far.
He had an amazing junior career and a very good 1st year pro....and then the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons have been very subpar....one has to wonder why.

Virtually from no where. I merely wondered if this was something that could happen with Poirier.

No point speculating. Wishing the young man all the best. The Flames are known as a supportive organization.

Chris: You were married?
Mats, Steel Dragon Road Manager: It was before you four boys and that rock 'n' roll music corrupted me, I still think about her sometimes actually, she was a very sweet girl
Chris: What happened? If you don't mind me asking
Mats, Steel Dragon Road Manager: one day we're in the park having lunch, I needed to take a piss so I got up to go to the bathroom and I'm standing there and all of sudden something over me, like a fear that my whole had already been laid out for me, like I'd be working for someone else, worrying about things that don't ####ing matter so I walked out of the bathroom and kept going and didn't come back
Chris: What do you mean? You just left her there?

He'll be fine. Adversity builds character, crisis defines it.

With his speed, it wouldn't be much of a stretch of his abilities to be an effective bottom 6 player. Hope everything works out, since he was a 1st round draft pick and you'd really like to get an NHLer from it.

I know the company line is that there's no such thing as over-ripening prospects, but I wonder if that's what has happened with him. He was ready to play in the NHL after his first AHL season, and when he didn't get the opportunity, he lost some motivation.
