As I said, unless she wants to toil in the 40's and 50's the rest of her career, with sporadic third round or better major appearances and maybe a couple low level tour wins, Coco is someone she should beat when she has control of the match.

Yup, and to add, she just beat Cibulkova the previous week in Sydney who was ranked #5 on the WTA at the time, so losing to Coco should be viewed as a disappointing loss. As the Senator mentioned earlier as well, she needs to win these matches in order to get her ranking higher and get more favourable draws down the road.

in non-AO news. How do you like Shapovalov's new outfit?
Pospisil, Polansky and Shapovalov are all in the main draw of the Maui Challenger next week.

Genie is one of the tennis players I follow on social media. I really get the impression from her that she is more about expanding her celebrity than her tennis accomplishments. She needs to grow up a bit.

I think she is definitely making strides in being more mature (reconciling with her former coach and taking the onus in seeking him out). In retrospect, getting so much success so early in her career was likely one of the worst things that happened, it set the bar so high.

I saw a brief clip of Genie's post match press conference and was surprised - in a good way.
First, she wasn't wearing much (any?) makeup and wasn't primping for the cameras
second, she answered straight forward and took accountability. Impressively she said something like she got caught up in the big moments of the match and has to be stronger mentally when that happens.
I dare say that Genie of 1 year ago does the opposite of both.

Where Bouchard was considered and candid in many of her observations in her media conference, Vandeweghe was testy and sometimes confrontational. She seems to carry a chip on her shoulder and isn’t exactly easy to warm to.
She was also like that on the court, sarcastically complaining to umpire Juan Zhang during the second set – see picture above – that a linesperson’s call had been “half an hour late.”
There’s no doubt Vandeweghe raised her level late in the match but still Bouchard deserved a better reward for her fight back and the shot by shot disciplined regularity of her game. With Vandeweghe it was way more hit and miss and ultimately there was just enough “hit” at the very end to enable her get the victory.
The bottom line for Bouchard is that she has just not played enough of those types of matches to be as steady and composed as she would like at crunch-time.

For me, it's more the way she lost the match than losing it altogether. I could handle her losing in straights a lot better than this. Just when you start to think she may have turned a corner she goes back to being Genie of old.
I agree you cannot lose control of a match like that at this level against a very average opponent. Way too many returns right up the middle of the court. Playing it that safe will send you packing 10 times out of 10.
Genie strikes me as someone who is desperately afraid to win as much as she is afraid to lose every time she is on the court.

last year's Genie was using the "spray and pray" strategy, so I can understand if she's a bit skittish right now about going for the big boomers. probably 95% of tennis is just grinding, and the elites separate themselves by having a rally-ending weapon that is also reliable enough to use regularly (but they still have to put in the work to set it up).
just like our beloved Flames who lost some offensive punch in search of a steadier defense, Genie is trying to rebuild her fundamentals so that there's something to fall back on if smacking winners isn't happening. it's a...process.

Milos won't be playing until at least midnight? Am I reading the schedule right?

Everyone needs to tune in and watch future #1 Zverev run Rafa side to side like he was Ariana. This is the guy our Felix will have to take down at the 2021 US Open final.

I'm watching (well flipping between the tennis and cricket, damn it's a good day for sports in Oz). Rafa is playing really good but still lost the first set. Agreed Zverev could be a future #1.

I think this Zverev - Nadal match is even a bit better than the Istomin - Joker match of a couple nights ago. What a backhander to win the 3rd set tie-breaker by Zverev.

Milos battles back from love-40 down to win his service game and take a 5-2 lead in set 1.
