His work was absolutely essential as to why some of the greatest cinematic scenes of all time were so revered. I adore his music and have since I was a little kid. Master.

Amazing composer. He also did the Untouchables and collaborated with John Carpenter on the Thing.

To which he did a fantastic job I may add. Big fan of that movie as IMO it's one of the masterpiece horror movies of the 80's.

Cinema Paradiso is his best work as far as I'm concerned. Just beautiful music throughout. Here's a sample from one of the most touching moments in all of cinema history. For context, the man is now a famous director, but worked in the local cinema as a boy. The local priest would censor out all the kissing scenes and force them to be cut out of the films. This is a montage of all those kissing scenes restored lovingly by his mentor who has recently passed away:

So many wonderful scores in his repertoire. Amazing that he only won the one Oscar. I've read some deride his work on spaghetti westerns and The Thing as somewhat boring and 'stereotypical' of the genres; like duh, his work is so 'stereotypical' because it DEFINED the genre!

For me one of my all-time favorite films is Cinema Paradiso, the haunting theme for it by him is still one of my all-time goosebump pieces of music in cinema.
