It is so nice not having to worry about space. If you want I can give you the exact items I used, I'll have to check at home tonight. I know you don't want a USB3 enclosure, something about issues with the chipset. I think you can go to 3TB, not sure though. 2TB seams lots.

Out of curiosity, when the system formats the new drive, will it do the on board drive too? Will it erase all my saved items?

I am fairly sure no. Tough to remember over a year ago but I do not recall any lost programs. It was pretty seamless IIRC.

I don't know if that enclosure will work. It doesn't look like it has eSATA.

Bump. Getting new Gateway and some portals installed tomorrow, anything we should be watching out for, or ensuring the tech does?

Are you in a newer built house or older?
Our new house setup took 20 minutes, it's pretty much plug and play.

I just realized that when I agreed to rent the gateway instead of purchase, ya bonehead move, they said I would get any new hardware as it comes out. Seems unlikely that Arris hasn't updated the main PVR or portals in 2 years?

28 year old 4 level split. Guy was here for 3 hours; had to call in his supervisor. Hooked up 3 locations; basement hobby area, pseudo basement studio and family room. He had to take the roundabout way for routing the coax through the basement ceiling because everything other than the hobby room is finished.

Don't know your version of Arris, but ours is the one where the main brain also acts as one of the portals.

No, we have the HDPVR in the basement and two portals upstairs. Im thinking its been 2 years, but really not sure. Gonna check the model number tonight.
Guess I could also skim this thread, or the shaw one, as I recall posting when I had installed.
edit- just found my post. Sept 2013. Yikes, no way my hardware is current. Guess I shouldn't be surprised that Shaw hasn't gone out of their way to notify me that I should be getting a hardware upgrade.

Ah yeah... my house was new in 2014, so everything was pre-wired and he only had to hook up the Gateway (brain) to the wires coming in from outside, then we set up the rest pretty easily enough.
I recall originally getting "@home" cable way back when, and the tech had a real trouble wiring that house (mid 80s build, also completely finished)... so I know your troubles.
