The sad thing for Poirier is that's a realistic trade.

I sure hope Treliving doesn't give up assets to get LV not to pick Brouwer. Expose him and let the chips fall where they may. I don't think Brouwer is under any delusion that his performance this season has been on par with his compensation. If he doesn't want to get exposed, he better have a great stretch and playoff performance here on out.

Too much is being said for the idea that UFAs won't sign here if the Flames expose a UFA they signed a year ago. UFAs sign for three reasons: the money/term, the location and/or the team is a winner. If the Flames want to continue to be able to sign big name UFAS, keep winning and don't let the cap situation get out of hand. Letting Brouwer go, should it come to that, would be a step in the right direction cap-wise.

Oh, and who thinks the hockey media and fanbases won't be able to reverse engineer the protected lists? I mean, we realistically have narrowed the Flames list to 7F-3D with the current most likely question being who does Treliving protect: Brouwer or Lazar? I think that kind of scenario is consistent across the league. The possibilities are even more limited with some teams like the Blue Jackets. If there's any positive spin to keeping ht elists secret it's the potential for big surprises come draft time.

I would think that some teams have harder decisions to make than the Flames do, and it may surprise people. I guess that the GMs would also want to keep the list a secret so it doesn't make the player such a topic of conversation in the media.

The point was made earlier that a GM would very likely let a guy know he wasn't being protected, and that he could expect to move. I would think it is likely that a GM knows exactly who Vegas would be selecting as they will more than likely inquire with Vegas as to the cost of protecting their asset.

Already done. You just have to protect the players yourself (they also have an autoprotect option).

By the looks of this, Anaheim will lose a great young D man because of Bieksa- Trading for him is one thing, NMC is horrific if it costs one of the great young D-core they have built

The Ducks will trade Fowler at the draft to a team that has only 2 D worth protecting.

For a pick? whoever is coming in will probably need protection too...

Not at the draft, sometime between the end of their season and the day the protection lists are due. The Expansion Draft happens a week before the draft.

All it takes is for one team to look at Anaheim's list and realize that a guy they plan on protecting isn't as good as Fowler. That team offers Anaheim their 3rd-best d-man plus a draft pick or prospect for Fowler. Now, Anaheim leaves that new player unprotected and lose him to Vegas rather than Fowler (or Vegas takes someone else and Anaheim keeps the new player).

Either way, Anaheim loses Fowler, but at least by trading him, they get something in return for him.

There will likely be a number of trades like that in May/June before the Expansion Draft.

I'm a little confused by the "players will be hurt they're not wanted" narrative. The vast majority of all players on all teams will be left unprotected. You get 7-3-1 on your protection list (or 4-4-1). Just because an organization doesn't protect someone doesn't mean they're not wanted, it means they had more valuable pieces to protect.

All players understand that player value varies from player to player. That's why some guys make more money than other guys or have longer contracts.

If Calgary decides to protect Lazar over Brouwer, it's not because the organization has said "We hate Troy and hope he's gone." It's because Brouwer is 31 years old while Lazar is 22. Which player holds longer term value for the organization? Lazar by a landslide (assuming of course he lives up to the potential the Flames see in him).

From everything I've heard, Bieksa will be willing to waive that NMC.

Just because the GMs don't want the lists made public, doesn't mean it won't happen...

Colin Campbell tells PTS the NHL is thinking making expansion lists public before event. Even considering some level of televised coverage.
That was my thought when I heard about them not wanting to make the lists public: Just a few weeks ago, they were talking about trying to make the Expansion Draft into a tv event. That will be difficult enough no matter what they do, but if the lists are private, it will be even worse.

If they want to keep the lists private to prevent the pundits from dissecting the choices, they can't very well have a tv event where the pundits will be dissecting the choices (whether they're known or not) for a couple of hours.

If anything, having the lists be private will be worse for them because the pundits will have to guess about who was and wasn't protected.
