Have always thought all of Black Day in July and Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot have great lines after another:
My faves:
Black day in July
Black day in July
The streets of Motor City now are quiet and serene
But the shapes of gutted buildings
Strike terror to the heart
And you say how did it happen
And you say how did it start
Why can't we all be brothers
Why can't we live in peace
But the hands of the have-nots
Keep falling out of reach
Edmund Fitzgerald's most haunting:
Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
Also, Minutes to Memories by John Mellencamp, maybe because I had a "suck it up and do the job" upbringing.
The old man had a vision but it was hard for me to follow
I do things my way and I pay a high price
When I think back on the old man and the bus ride
Now that I'm older I can see he was right
Another hot one out on highway eleven
This is my life It's what I've chosen to do
There are no free rides, no one said it'd be easy
The old man told me this my son I'm telling it to you
Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

If there was a Yer Favorite Social Justice Song thread Black Day in July would be my entry. For as great and expressive as the lyric is have a listen and concentrate on the drumming. It's amazing, particularly in the back half of the song. Lightfoot has written some really good songs.
The more I see
The less I know
About all the things I thought were wrong or right
And carved in stone
So, don't ask me about war
Religion, or God
Love, Sex, or Death
Because
Everybody knows what's going wrong with the world
But I don't even know what's going on in myself
You've gotta work out your own salvation
With no explanation
To this Earth we fall
On hands and knees we crawl
And we look up to the stars
And we reach out and pray
To a deaf, dumb and blind God
Who never explains
Everybody knows what's going wrong with the world
But I don't even know what's going on in myself
Lord, I've been here for so long
I can feel it coming down on me
I'm just a slow emotion replay of somebody
I used to be
There isn't a single mediocre lyric in the whole song. Damn near perfection.

Nick Cave (and the Bad Seeds): Into My Arms (just one verse)
Quote:
I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoots as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
It loads a mite slow, and soon I found out
It'll get you into trouble but it can't get you out
I thought of another one today. Working at the carwash blues by the late, great, Jim Croce. I mean, the first line is about a guy who served time for being a deadbeat dad. How "street" is that? Rappers could learn a lesson from 'ol Jim.
Quote:
Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
They wouldnt listen to the fact that I was a genius
The man say, we got all that we can use.
Now i got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Working at the car wash blues
Well, I should be sittin in an air conditioned office in a swivel chair
Talkin some trash to the secretaries
Sayin, hey now mama, come on over here.
Instead, Im stuck here rubbin these fenders with a rag
And walkin home in soggy old shoes
With them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Workin at the car wash blues
You know a man of my ability
He should be smokin on a big cigar
But till I get myself straight I guess Ill just have to wait
In my rubber suit a-rubbin these cars
Well, all I can do is a shake my head
You might not believe that its true
For workin at this end of niagara falls
Is an undiscovered howard hughes
So baby, dont expect to see me
With no double martini in any high-brow society news
Cause I got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Workin at the car wash blues

I haven't heard this one in a while, but Hacker came on shuffle today and I forgot it's one of the most quotable songs ever.
"I got this pregnant snake; stay surrounded by long hairs
A plethora of maniacs and spiral stairs
Make your water break in the Apple Store
Sink or swim, who f****** cares
Cut the birth cords
Press send
Yeah, thick
Gaga can't handle this s***"
"My existence is a momentarily lapse of reason"
"Teaching b****** how to swim"
"The tables flipped, now we got all the coconuts b****"
"Havin' conversations with your car alarm
When you come out, your s*** is gone
Soon your crew will be serving sandwiches named after me
Vietnamese style, fool, please"

Maypole, maypole, maypole, you've spun me 'round
And knocked me off my axis mundi, maypole
Maypole, maypole, the ties that bind you will unwind
To free me one day and everything decays
Everything decays, forest tumbles down
To make the soil, planets fall apart
Just to feed the stars and stuff their larders
And what made me think we're any better
And what made me think we'd last forever
Was I so naive? Of course, it all unweaves
"I hate whiny ****ing songs like this but I can't afford a therapist.
Sorry guys, here's a solo."
Andrew Jackson Jihad - Distance
Not super profound, but every time I hear it, I can't not sing along.
"Trees drop their leaves, they fall by so fast
You don’t even notice the weather
Looked up and you’d passed
and I’d thought that you’d live forever
But you’re gone forever
There were new stories
just last time I saw her from the life of my mama’s mother
We’ll have to dream up the ones that we missed
because nothing about life is forever
I’ll love you forever
Forever spreads and blocks the way
The future folds into today
Fighting the wish to make you stay
You have to go and that’s ok"
RVIVR - Grandma
