Default R.I.P. Sir George Martin

Legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin passes away at 90. Thank you Sir George, popular music as we know it would be very different today without his brilliant work with the Beatles.

First in with the... "Knew he wouldn't finish GoT!!"

... "Oh, there's another guy."

Pretty amazing producer.

Certainly "the fifth Beatle".

He pushed them to creative levels they never would have reached on their own.

The news of George's passing triggered an impromptu Beatles youtube odyssey. Feeling kind of old, as that music is intertwined with my earliest memories. For the sake of my musical sensibilities, it's sure a good thing that it's great music.

Martin's cool temperament was at least as important as his impressive skills as an arranger. The Beatles can't have been easy to work with, showing up wasted half the time and expecting him to do things nobody had ever done in a studio before. And they could be real dicks, like how they stopped including Martin's name on the album credits after reading a couple articles giving him what they thought was too much credit for their recordings.

A lot of people also don't know there's a "fifth Rolling Stone" (aside from Brian Jones).

Ian Stewart was the Stones piano player until their manager told them that he didn't fit their image and couldn't be on stage anymore. He stayed with the band in the background, being the road manager, taking care of them, etc.

"Ian Stewart. I'm still working for him. To me the Rolling Stones is his band."
