Aren't Klimchuk and Carroll the same age?

Carroll is a year older, he's an overage player.

Lots of changes as we approach the WHL trade deadline:
  • Brandon acquired Klimchuk, but also Reid Gow (from Spokane)
  • Victoria sent Axel Blomqvist to Moose Jaw but got goalie Justin Paulic (and Alexey Sleptsov) back; they also got Alex Forsberg from Saskatoon
  • The Hitmen got goalie Brendan Burke from Portland for back-up Evan Johnson. Big upgrade.
Another 2-3 days to go before the Jan 10 deadline, but the Wheaties are upgraded and likely the top team in the East.

Klimchuk played okay this afternoon vs the Hitmen, a couple of good scoring chances he set up. The Wheat Kings scored a beauty of a PP goal in the third, it was a tick-tack-toe..toe play. 3 beautiful passes Bukarts finished off but it was Klimchuk that started the passing play, but his was the third assist. Not a great game but not bad. Still looks awkward on the right wing though, doesn't look nearly as comfortable on his off wing.

This is the first time I've been impressed with Kanzig though to be honest. There are still some simple things he can fix but he was sound positionally this afternoon and played a lot of minutes, he was leaned on heavily for the Hitmen. I don't think much of him as a prospect, but credit where it's due, he had a good game.

Eric Roy: I admitted had high hopes for him in his draft yr, especially when Flames nabbed him. He seemed to have the potential to be an X-factor - size, skill and skating.
Unfortunately, he seems to have regressed - tentative, questionable decision making.
He did have a better 3rd period today, thankfully and had a nice assist. 1st two periods were forgettable.

My bet is Roy gets the Joey Leach / Coda Gordon treatment.

Some high praise for McDonald from head scout of hockeyprospect.com

Ryan Yessie @RyanHPscout
#Calgary #Flames prospect Mason McDonald was outstanding tonight for .@IslandersHKY . Made some great saves and looked very calm out there.

McDonald made 31 saves on 31 shots for his first shutout of the season.
18w 17l 3.02gaa .903 sv%

Smith was kept out of the lineup in Oshawa. Probably still as a precaution.

The only difference being is Roy was drafted in his 19 year old season, while the others were drafted in their 18 year old season.

Leach/Gordon were very likely never offered an NHL contract.

Roy was offered a contract during the off-season. (The Flames had to offer one to retain his rights)

The Flames had to offer Culkin a contract after his 19 year old season also, but he declined it and went back to Junior and earned a contract the following summer.

Here's an article on our prospects in Brandon.
Mostly about Klimchuk but a bit about Roy. It's good to hear he understands his weakness and is working on it. He has some good tools if he can put it together.

Quote:
“It’s a goal of ours to make the finals this year,” Roy said. “Everyone thinks we’re a “next year” team but this year we are going to be pushing in the playoffs and looking to go far.”
Roy added that his main goal is to work on his play in the backend, where he admits there are some adjustments to be made.
“[The] defensive end I need to work on, but it’s coming along,” he said. “I just have to keep working at it every day, keep trying to get better in practice and in games, just keep working hard.”

I have no idea how to evaluate young goalies, how is MacDonald doing? What's a realistic projection based on his current play?

Potential starter, if you're drafted in the first three rounds that's the expectation.

Haven't seen him play but his numbers look good. 3.02 GAA and a save percentage of .903. Very good numbers for an 18 year old, especially when you compare that to his back up who is putting up 4.77 GAA and a .853 save percentage.

I don't have any idea how to evaluate goalies in junior either. I know that stats don't always mean much. Look at Keatley's stats the year we drafted him and he only went in the 5th round which later proved out as probably where he should have been picked.

The team that year was unbelievable. Keetley was a good goalie in junior, but those stats were significantly skewed by the quality of team in front of him. Stefan Meyer, Kris Russell, Clarke MacArthur, Cam Barker, Dave Schlemko, Darren Helm, and Derek Dorsett all played for the Tigers that season.

They sure were fun to watch!

With junior goalies, footwork and size are the main factors. You can teach positioning, and a bunch of other things, but if you can't get yourself up and down, left and right quickly, none of the other things matter much.

Kanzig scored his first of the season tonight, couldn't wipe the smile off his face either. Was nice to see.
